Time to move on...

The thread starter wrote

David is wondering if he has overreacted and taking on-board opinions, like an adult does

So you proclaim you were leaving but find you can't keep away. I guess this is one of those pointless threads you was moaning about. :fail

Ah well, the Six Nations starts on Saturday so that's at least one good natured thread to look forward to.

If I buy two XL jackets and stitch them together will I get an XXL one ? ;)

Everybody stay!! I'll be your virtual friend...:D:thumb:

Perhaps changes in the forum merely mirror changes in our society. If its become more aggressive and confrontational its because that's the way society appears to be going. In terms of technical content its merely a reflection of the increasing complexity of the Mercedes cars we drive and deliberate paucity of information about them released by Mercedes. Personally I feel this is deliberate policy to increase revenue stream from servicing and repair for main agents.

Two decades ago people might have started a thread with

"First remove the distributer cap and check the rotor arm is OK If its fine mark the crankshaft pulley with white paint and hook up your timing stobe light--------------etc etc " :thumb:
Now its " Locate the engine diagnostic plug and plug in your dedicated Star diagnostic system ------ haven't got one :fail------- forget it! :(
Layer on top of that the bittery disputed role our beloved cars' have--- or not :dk: in climate change and pollution in urban environments and you have the recipe mix for the prevailing "atmosphere" in many motoring forums today . I can understand why people may wish to opt out but its just the way it is I'm afraid.:(

Welcome to society isolated from face-to-face communication by keyboards and screens. Unfortunately the simple "don't say it unless you'd say it face to face in a public place" rule has gone out of the window.

That's why I stay out of those threads, they are not useful so are best ignored and by not feeding the fire it will burn out.

For me this forum is about the meets, the cars and the people. Long may it reign.

As for the admins, for me you can do what you want, it's your forum. As you'll know some of the antagonists are friends of mine, I'm not going to take sides.

I've made many friends over the years on here, even a few from Lancashire(!)

Grrr.....

As the great Richard Ashcroft once sang "there's more in a smile than in a hand".

Just remind me where he's from again Lee?

this is by far and away the best and actually least tribal (Bruno excepted)

Absolutely agree. Empty Room + Bruno = Argument. (Sorry B couldn't resist)

Add to that mix the Brexiteers/Remainers, Nationalists/Unionists, Mayists/Corbynisters, in out shake it all about, and the antagonism that these polarised debates produce, it's easy to see where one might feel 'ganged-up' on if your expressed views are constantly negated by vociferously put argument.

There's a separate thread for the US elections... :D

I joined this Forum on the 8th November 2007 - nearly ten year ago... In my time I have posted 4,677 times - I'm told averaging 1.39 posts per day.

I came to the forum looking for practical advice. Which indeed is what I got from friendly knowledgeable folks.

Since that time many of the members have become friends - some in the virtual world and some in the more real world sense.

Going back ten years this forum had a wealth of experience in Mercedes. Owners who needed advice got just that - proper advice. That's why it became so successful over time.

Over the more recent years however this has changed. The experts have moved or been moved on (some of them were hard to handle!), and been replaced by new Mercedes owners. It's sad to say that the new owners do not have the same enthusiasm for the marque. It's arguable whether that's to do with the cars becoming more common place, and more dumbed down, or the short term temporary ownership that many of us (myself includes) take advantage of nowadays.

I then look at what's gone on this weekend. There is no right or wrong - all sides have played a part - yet members seem to be able to inflame others without any action from the admin team.

I will look back on my time fondly - especially some of the Saturday afternoon hilarity of the past. Sadly I do think now is the time for me to leave.

So - I wish all the best to you good folks. Feel free to look me up on Facebook or not - as you wish.

All the best.

David

if its any consolation David, i dont think it has anything to do with Mercedes of this forum, I am new here only joining a few weeks ago but I have been an active member of 2 Saab forums for 15 years, 1 of which I was a Moderator on and I felt the exact think there, I think it must just be the sigh of times (prince enters from the left )people change situations change and life in general changes, in short nothing stays the same, but I agree, people come and go on forums and its the whit and banter that make a forum fun, the Saab forums stopped being fun for me so i stopped posting in them eventually i stopped frequenting one of them altogether, its a bit like school I guess, as the years go by your class mates change and eventually you leave. life in full circle

Don't worry about it. Your job here is to keep us informed on the M3 and the lunatic car! :thumb: Which by the way you seem to be slacking..;)

haha! Yes, I should know my role by now. :D

I've done nothing with the Caterham for over a year, except to spend half a day with Mountune, Geartronics at Longacre proving ground to tune out the downshift backfire/bangs.

It'll be out this year though, Caterham want it on a stand at the 60th anniversary bash at Donington Park in July, plus a few track days, then I'm probably going to sell it.
