The telephone is quite secure.

So I believe.

telephone

kinky your right its just the person on the other end your giving the information to are they trust worthy

To be honest, the most important thing is to make sure that the pages you enter your details in are secure. (HTTPS) and you have a little padlock at the bottom.

Even more secure is when the sites payment facilities are done by a specialised clearing house like SECPAY or similar. This way, the retailer never gets your CC details at all. The only people that see the details are the Bank or clearing house.

The retailer just gets confirmation that the transaction was successful or not - nothing more.

tip

so the tip was no good spike

Hmm... I've wondered about this stuff..

How would it be if I got a new credit card with a LOW limit
say £250 or £500 and used only this for purchases over the net, would that effectively limit my losses to a max of 500 quid?

Steve

exactly what we've done - the fun bit is getting them to keep the credit limit low - every time you send them a payment they seem to up the limit :)

Check out Barclaycard for a good interest free deal - we got 14 months on purchases and transfers!!!!

Capital One claim to give good internet security but should you have any disputes on your bill they are almost impossible to deal with (well in our experience anyway)

You're covered against fraud anyway with most of the cards. I have been skimmed loads of times and it has never cost me a cent.

Actually, I have a great deal of insider knowledge on this subject (working for the good guys) but couldnt really go into it in a public forum.

PM me if you have specific questions.

This very topic was discussed on Radio 2 today. The fraud on the internet is no worse than fraud on the high street. One interesting comparison, you and you other half go for a meal, you pay by card, the restaurant owner takes your card, copies the number and three digit security code on the back and can then carry out card holder not present purchases. A few weeks later, you get your statement, damage done to card issuer, you should be safe. At the end of the day, if the crook wants your money, he or she will get it. Just try to do as much as you can to prevent them from getting their hands on your hard, or not so hard :D , earned money.

The interesting thing here is that its the shops with the merchant account that gets the charge back if its a stolen card - even if the card issuer cleared it at the time of use.

Basically the banks dont really care because its not them that pays, its the poor shopkeeper that feels the pain and all he can do is charge you more for your purchases in order to try and recoup losses. In order to to pay for these consumer increases we borrow more and therefore the bank makes more...

So in the end, everyone pays for card fraud *but* the banks, who perversely benefit from it in a roundabout way.

This goes someway towards explaining why none of the banks have got together to try and fight these types of crime head on.
