will using the manual gears on a tiptronic box improve the mpg?

i ask this cos on my current vehicle there is an average of 10 mpg difference between the auto and the manual version so i figure by using the manual tip gears it might improve my mpg

or am i being stupid:doh:

You're being optimistic.

A genuine manual box has a different mechanical organisation from a MB Tip. So just changing the gears on the tipu box doesn't change theat underlying fact.

That said - in principle if you can out think the car's transmission controls you could save a bit in some circumstances. But in practice ...... not really.

You don't say what you drive. Mercedes don't have Tiptronic.

I want to agree with that but for some reason on my E350 the computer reads about 4 or 5 mpg higher in M over the same 24 mile journey than in E or S, I was quite happy finding that out but then realised I couldn't be bothered with having to think about when to tell the car to upshift/hold on to a gear/downshift depending on the road, I got an automatic car for a reason lol

Yesterday I have been through the owners manual for my E320 CDI 7G Auto and read about the auto funcion also tech.spec.for comsumption.

For the consumption,I am not worried because I am somewhere around the specs.
What hit me is, the M/S/C on auto, the manual says on M position the lower gear will
be automatically changed to avoid engine labouring on the other hand it says that
( always in manual position) you will have to change to a higher gear because otherwise the engine will over rev and you will have a fuel cut off, well as far as my car is concerned this is not true, because I use the M for agressive driving and on hard acceleration the rev.counter goes to the beging of the red mark and it changes to the higher gear automatically !!

Mine is the same in tiptronic, it changes up automatically even if you hold the gear lever to the left & try to force it to stay in a lower gear, it always over rides you and will not allow the engine to over rev or even go into the red.

Thanks Russ for your concern, to tell you the truth I was a little bit
worried and i read the manual page over and over, because i know it doesn`t function as it is written on the manual.

I owe you one,mate.

And did you see the word tiptronic in your manual?

Not sure about that, because my concern was about the operation
of the auto gearbox in different modes, sorry for that, but i will check and
be back.
