Too old to drive ?

Limitations...? 25mph on an A class road with a speed limit of 60mph, is far more dangerous than lets say, driving at 100mph on the same stretch of road. If your limitations are likely to cause frustration to other drivers, resulting in serious accidents, perhaps a 3/5 year assessment on your driving skills isn't a bad idea.

Tractor drivers more dangerous than lets say driving at 100mph? Mmmmmm..........no.

Back on topic for a moment ......

The statistics on accidents shows that the two extremes of age are the ones most likely to be involved.

At the earlier ages, inexperience is the probable cause - even though they have had the latest in training and testing standards.

At the latter ages, the body will be taking it's own toll on events as sight and cognitive reflexes suffer. It happens to the great and good so don't think any of us are exempt.

I think that we all have a duty to ensure that we stay fit and proper to drive. From respecting our own mortality we can preserve that of the others around us.

When did you last have your eyes checked ? Especially those of us who don't wear glasses .............

I discussed this thread (topic) to a learned friend of mine today. Briefly weighing up the arguments, waiting for an opinion. And then offered mine about regular re-tests.

After he calmed down a bit, he said in no uncertain terms cant happen, wont happen. Because too many people (bad drivers) would lose their jobs for a start whose jobs depend on them driving, such as lorry drivers, cabbies, police etc, then there are all the people that rely on cars to get about (where's the public transport then) and so on - THAT WOULD PROBABLY HAVE THEIR licenses taken a way.
Yes I said but that's the point.
His final remark was, "that's like capping the price of houses. Everyone knows it needs to be done. But who the hell would do it!"

Cant argue with that one :)

Hi,

There seems to be agreement that there are good and bad drivers of all ages so a simple answer to this question is to have more traffic police on the roads.

Then if it's an 'old codger' doing 25 in the middle lane or a young blond plucking her eyebrows etc. then police should be able to decide whether that 'offence' requires a degree of re-training or a proper test of competence.

So instead of relying solely on the mantra that 'speed kills' the onus would switch to driver ability so that the truly bad and selfish drivers among us are either removed or retrained.....irrespective of their age.

Another minor point is that older people tend to use their cars locally etc. e.g. shopping, visiting etc. which allows them to maintain a degree of independence...after all you may not be able to walk to the shops (health) but you can drive there (safely)....and they are less keen to venture out on M-ways etc.

BUT THAT JUST DOESN'T HAPPEN.

why wait until someones killed, with all the monitoring (speed cams) supervision (police) and deterrent (courts).
jobs I suppose

I just dont :wallbash: get it
