Car
hers - slk 320, his - dull diesel BMW fleet :/, Xtrail, Honda CBR 1100xx, Yamaha YZF600, Ribble Road
Am really cross with myself as I was too busy sitting in the sun and missed this  but my boss tells me he watched it - and the SLR rocked  :bannana: It is now apparently top of the TG table :bannana: I only need £318k :p

I watched it as well and it was awesome. He demonstrated how good the brakes were by stating the highway code,It says the stopping distance at 60mph is say this much and Im going too stop this car in the same distance but drive at 120mph WOW   The brake pads even caught fire at one point  (hope its flame proof under there).I noticed as well that it looks like the wheel centre caps stay static when the car is moving similar to the maybach.<thinking of a cool mod now>

The Rolls Royce Phantom center RR caps to that too. What an incredible looking car. Get out of my way, you cheap little ugly Maybach :bannana: :bannana:

I made sure I saw it. The sound of it was very odd, but nice all the same. Hope to see it in the flesh at the motor show.

i would get one ... but its only LHD :(

:-) What's your other car going to be though when the Rolls is always in the garage?

The SLR is the first car since the Countach to give me that boy hood super car tingle!!

One way or another I must drive one

i helped build the FAB 1 thing....

scary - cost more than the SLR - about 700K

the roof / sunroof was 17K alone... for ONE bit of plastic. The film indistry throws money about like confetti..

You're kidding! What was your involvement?

I couldn't believe they let him drive it at all, let alone thru a busy town. And 700K!!!!! What would have happened if it had been totalled?

I thought the best part of the show was when Richard Hammond was "made to forget" how to drive.

I think our local BMW dealer offers the same service, and quite popular it seems too :p

OK, I will be the voice of dissent then...

I simply don't understand the purpose of the SLR:

- it is not as beautiful as the SL (just look at the side profile, which look very "gumpy"
- it does not have a clever folding roof
- it is only slightly lighter but of course more powerful than an SL 55 (but less so than the monster SL 65)
- it is 3 times (at least) more expensive than an SL 55, which can do at least 90 % of what the SLR can
- the interior is taken out of the SL
- it falls between two chairs, of being an all-out supercar or a comfortable cruiser

So, apart from having to buy a car because it is badged McLaren and knowing it is the top of the range MB, I don't see any objective reasons for not being "content" with an SL55 or indeed an SL65.

This month TopGear magasine has a test of the SLR v the Carrera GT, which clearly shows how the GT is so very different from any other Porsche, while the SLR is not.

Flamesuit on...

The pinicle of Mercedes/Mclaren engineering and construction
A truly “rare” and “exclusive” car
It is the closest looking thing to a bruiser American Muscle car with the best that modern day automotive engineering can throw at it, while still maintaining the Mercedes image.
And most of all just damb sexy
That’s my view on it anyway.

You shouldn't believe everything you read :D :D

How about:

McLaren fancied building something to follow the F1. Mercedes wanted a non-Maybach highly styled flagship vehicle, partly so they could do a bit of image stretching in their conventional range by picking up on styling cues.

MB obviously get a big say so you end up with a fudge by a Anglo-German committee which has to incorporate lots of bits from the MB parts bin, hence the braking system which I understand is loathed by many people.

Still, I would not turn my nose up at one.

If I had £318k to spend on a car - objectivity wouldn't come into it - and I'd prob have the SL for the daily runaround to boot :D :D

Anders - you are a hero - thankyou thankyou thankyou :bannana: :bannana:
