twin fuel pumps

hi folks

i have a problem with my 124 300e
on acceleration at about 4500 rev the car dies, as soon as the revs drop the cars fine, its as if the fuel cuts off
i have changed the fuel filter and was wondering what the systems would be if only one fuel pump was running

The pumps are connected in series if thats any help. Sounds as if a routine engine analyser should be able to detect whats wrong- poor fuelling or maybe ignition problems.
