You heard it here first -

The long awaited update for the UMI system is now out. This updates the earlier UMI systems to the new Navigation 20 system which includes 7 digit postcode support.

For those unaware, the UMI (Navigation 20) is a retrofit option that turns an Audio20 in a W204, W212, W207 or GLK into a navigation system with european coverage, 7 digit postcodes, TMC and colour screen mapping.

This is not for those cars that have comand.

Alfie, I specced my W212 with Harmon Kardon (code 810) and CD changer & Media Interface (code 510), I would now like to add the UMI for the sat nav. Do you know if I can still do this what with having the media interface? Would anything have to be removed (and subsequently be saleable)? One last thing, is £650 (£850 fitted) a fair price for the UMI?
Thanks in advance, and sorry for so many questions.

The UMI comes with the features of the media interface so you will have to remove the media interface which would be worth something.

£850 is a very good price if you can get it.

Price based on MB Milton Keynes although MB Chesterfield will better that for me. Good news that I may be able to sell something to put towards UMI :thumb:

Do you know what the nav software is? Is it the same as the new comand? Cheers,
Steve

Make sure that the guys fit the Navigation 20 - or fit the UMI and apply the firmware and map updates, or you will have old functionality and old map data.

If you look here:

Comand Online Ltd :: Mercedes Navigation Disks :: UMI & Navigation 20 Map Update 2009/2010

I wrote up what the Navigation-20 spec provides over the UMI spec, and what countries and how much mapping is on the Nav-20 disk.

With the older UMI there was a UK version, a France version, and a rest-of-the-EU version. UK version had 7 digit postcode. Also UK, France separate due to TMC licencing in those countries.
With the Navigation-20 there is just 1 version for Europe, so I'm 99% sure that MB sorted out their TMC and 7 digit postode licencing issues - but I have not explicitly checked that it actually has 7 digit postcode because I havent installed a Nav-20 or updated a UMI yet. The spec shows full TMC for UK though.

Have the w204 and w212 UMI exact the same partnumber? I ask becouse the displays has different size...

Is the number of pixels also different?

Which DVD are you referring to? Do you mean the USB stick (instead of a DVD) that would of course be used via USB?

Do you mean you would have maps updated when you say "navved up"?

I guess what i am asking is - I got the UMI option as a factory fit - is there any way of adding the nav without having a whole new UMI?
Ta

edit: its ok - i see that I have the media interface not the UMI...

UMI = Universal Media Interface which also has navigation.

UCI = Media Interface without navigation. The hardware is different so no you cant get navigation capability by just a dvd update.

Back to the UMI/Navigation 20 topic, how different are the W204 and W212 products, or are they the same?

As NPUK points out, Mercedes have caused themselves lots of confusion by renaming 'UCI' to Media Interface in the marketing documentation when Universal Media Interface already existed.

The UMI part number has been officially superceeded by the 'Navigation 20' which came out a couple of months ago with newer software and newer maps. The latest map update for UMI updates the older system to the Navigation 20 spec - so I guess this is part of trying to remove the confusion.

I have the user manual dated 31/Aug/2009 that says the product is for W/S/X204, A/C207, W/S212 (C/C-Estate/GLK, E-Coupe/E-Coupe-convertible, E/E-Estate) still calling the product UMI.

UMI update

Nice to hear that the 1st Update has been issued !
1) How do we 'see' the firmware version of an existing UMI?
2) Do we know what is Mercedes' upgrade policy against new purchases ?
I have installed my UMI 3 weeks ago and do I still need to pay for it ?
3) Any reference to support for iPhone 3GS as it is currently and I attribute various freezes of the iPod functionality upon connecting the iPhone to this?

Hi, had this as a reply from MB HQ to a couple of questions regarding UMI for my W212;

12th January 2010

Dear Mr *******

Mercedes-Benz Model: E-ClassE 350 CDI
Chassis No: WDD212***********
Registration: *****

Thank you for contacting the Mercedes-Benz Customer Assistance Center Maastricht N.V.

In regards to your query, I have been in contact with our Technical Department who responded as follows.

The stainless steel pedal covers are now available to order (part number A0002900501). Unfortunately, the stock level in Germany is low so the delivery may take longer.

The UMI system is not compatible for this model. It is currently only available for C-Class. However, a system called 'Navigation 20' is in development for the new E-Class and should be launched in mid 2010.

Yours sincerely

1) AFAIK all existing UMI are old firmware. The new firmware makes it into a Navigation 20 - which is available at much higher price that the UMI. So if your unit does not have the Navigation 20 features, then you need the update. The link I posted before shows you the navigation 20 updated features.

2) You'll have to buy it. If you bought your UMI from Comand Online please email in and we'll give you a discount as it is so close to your purchase. Or if you qualify under the terms of the offers on this board there is a discount to be had.

3) No mention - but I suspect some bluetooth bugs will have been removed

Have you tried bluetooth media streaming to the UMI (instead of physically connecting it?)

Richard

Does anyone know if this upgrade affects the NAV50 system? I have a 3 week old car with this in but it definitely doesn't have 7 digit postcode which would be extremely useful.

Thanks

Wouldnt have thought so as it is a different system. This is an add on that lets you have navigation through the standard Audio 20 headunit.
