underwhelmed by the performance of my winter tyres

From the sound track there was the sound of a constant " spray" of wet slush against the under side of the car rather than the crackle you get from hard frozen snow /slush, signifying the road surface temperature was probably above freezing ------due to either ambient temperature or the liberal application of roadgrit /salt by "Aebirdeen toon council" --- actually ideal conditions to get the best out of a set of full winter tyres. After nightfall it might have been a considerably hairier experience.

Having driven a rear wheel drive car with and without winter tyres on imho they make quite a difference in cold weather both in the wet and in snow (one journey was a 300 mile drive from Aberdeen to Teesside in the snow we had in 2012)

Here's a question - are studded tyres legal in the UK?
...no.

I was working in Scandinavia that first really bad winter a few years ago. In Finland studded tyres are mandatory after a certain month (November?), we had our hire cars pulled back by the hire company for a mandatory tyre change (and back again in spring). I can honestly say you could drive on sheet ice and not really notice too much difference until you stepped out of the door, before the second foot made contact with the ground you'd have slipped and be flat on your back winded and wondering what the hell was happening. Driving on ice was much easier than actually getting to / from the car from the hotel door. The difference with studded tyres is just phenomenal! Particularly when the roads aren't salted and they're just scraped back of fresh snow so what you're left with is just a hard icy sub-layer. However, winter tyres over here are still good and I swear by them now -but only when driving accordingly. Problem with the UK is allot of motorists just don't know how to drive when conditions are poor. Winter tyres help allot -but then folk go out and think they're invincible again.
