Value of gearbox from a salvage car?

What a result - £150 is an absolute steal imho.
Is he going to throw the clutch in as well?

Well done :)

I agree - a bargain. The TNT price is also very good. ;)

He's going to see if it's any good when it comes out - to be honest it wil be on only 60K.

Not sure if he's going to throw it in or what - but he knows I have an interest. He said he will also see if it will affect the shipping cost.

I am not prepared to pay hardly anything at all for a used clutch though.

Yep - I wouldn't want to 'pay' much for it, but it would be a bonus if he threw it in as part of the deal, after all, who else is going to buy it? :o

A 60K MB clutch would probably last longer than most normal car's clutches from new lol. ;)

Result Graham! £150 is SO cheap!!! I'll let you know if my request gets any response;)

great news but i would never fit or even refit a second hand/part used clutch. whilst the box is out take the chance to fit a whole new assembly - you got the box cheap enough it seems silly to penny pinch on a disposable item like a clutch.

Good point, that works for me.

I would definately be of the same school of thought normally guys, it's just that MB clutches are so well made and durable they rarely seem to really need replacing. I've seen plenty of Mercedes-Benz vehicles on the original clutches at 150K miles plus. I'm sure there is more trouble with the propshaft couplings, clutch hydraulics, differential seals and indeed the gearboxes themselves than there is with the friction linings of the clutches!

I'd bet that a proper MB clutch costs more than what Graham has paid for the entire gearbox, and if it's a choice between a cheap pattern part one or a proper MB (or identical) one, then I know what I would choose. ;)

Besides, Graham's gearboxes don't tend to last as long as the clutches anyway :D

On a side note, how long do you intend on keeping the car now Graham?

Graham

As the guy has given you a good deal you should ask him if it's ok to post his contact details onto the forum.
There are plenty of subscribers who want to buy parts and I'm sure he wants to sell them as fast as possible, even if a little discounted.

Lets wait and see if the parts arrive and are any good first;)

Drawing his attention to the forum was something that I (not entirely selfishly) wanted to do. As soon as he has a greater awareness of the value and rarity of some of the parts he has, we risk the prices rising.

I will happily pass on his details to anyone that wants something specific via PM.

The car has almost entire drivers side damage in terms of panels. Suspension is OK. He has the sold interior, bonnet, h/lamps, drivers wing, door mirrors and kompressor from engine, everything else under bonnet is ok.

So there are a few passenger side panels, engine minus Kompressor and the running gear left.

I suppose the diff could be a steal.

It's times like this when you start looking back - Remember that ECU? :(

I bet that would be a steal too.

So your £150 for a gearbox was more than reasonable!

He definately hasn't broken a car before then, has he! :o

Just arrived. Roped to a pallet which was then entirly shrink wrapped. Oil of course drained.

Will be delivering to my mechanic shortly who will hopefully tell me he can fit me in soon for the swap over :D

Morality

Not wishing to be a killjoy, :( :( but I am getting some mixed messages here "morality wise" This individual obviously doesn't know the true value of the gearbox or any of the bits he is selling. See recon box donsfields at £600 and according to R2D2 £1500 for a pukka MB replacement!! You could argue that that's his lookout but at the same time if it turns out to be a crap gearbox then can you really complain? At the end of the day it maybe depends on what he actually paid for the car? Hope it works out for you Graham and get the clutch done while your at it ;)

Hi Graeme,

I think the general consensus is that a car that is written off with panel damage is unlikely to have a faulty gearbox as well?

Yes, it is within the realms of possibility, but not likely I would have thought :)

If the original clutch is included, I would inspect it before replacing it regardless, all things considered.

After all, as I have previously mentioned, MB clutches tend to be very durable - probably better than a number of 'aftermarket' items, and a new MB clutch may well cost more than the gearbox did anyway ;)
