Value of gearbox from a salvage car?

Not wishing to be a killjoy, :( :( but I am getting some mixed messages here "morality wise" This individual obviously doesn't know the true value of the gearbox or any of the bits he is selling. See recon box donsfields at £600 and according to R2D2 £1500 for a pukka MB replacement!! You could argue that that's his lookout but at the same time if it turns out to be a crap gearbox then can you really complain? At the end of the day it maybe depends on what he actually paid for the car? Hope it works out for you Graham and get the clutch done while your at it ;)

I will be fitting a new clutch. Mine is on 103K and only slips if you repeatedly drop the clutch from insane revs on dry tarmac where the sticky 245's get thier own way :D However the cost of the clutch in terms of parts is cheap - and with gearbox out is not going to affect my labour bill much at all.

The guy stripping the car is mechanically competant and has had some parts on eBay. If he is IT literate enough to sell on eBay, he has no doubt searched and seen the going rate for similar items.

I actually based my £150 offer on the £600 from Dronsfields. That £600 buys you a recon box with a warranty. I have bought a used box, no maintenance no warranty. All in all, my offer was not too unfair. I think he must have got the whole car for peanuts so is not looking for top money on every part.

My mechanic was pleased when I delivered it yesterday and commented at one of the ancillaries also included, which could have been removed, and that it looked very good.

Next week I should find out. The box I trust has only done 60K and mine only failed at 90K with a very rare fault and had had been abused for at least 60K by me and perhaps for 40K previosuly by the 1st owner!

However, have no fear. If the box I have bought is a dog, I have no intention whatsoever of complaining about it! It's one of those chances if it pulls of I am a winner, if it fails it's just another £150 on an already large bill. I dare say 2 broken boxes are better than one unless both suffering exact same fault anyhow.

Gearbox wizards

Fair enough Graham. Good policy on the clutch. :D All being well your powertrain should be good for another 100k. Wonder if its worth rebuilding your old box as a spare if its not entirely wrecked. You need to find a gearbox wizard. I used to know a wizard in the wilds of Aberdeenshire who could rebuild any gear box for very little money simply because he enjoyed the challenge. Really nice guy too.MAGIC. :) :)

I think £150 for a gearbox off of a 'wrote-off' vehicle might be cheap, but certainly not excessively so. As Graham has already stated, he bought it sight unseen, no gaurantee or warranty. £100 might have been cheeky and would he have also had the few 'extra bits?'

Good luck with the install, and fingers crossed that all will be okay.

Get the car back tomorrow - apparently the gearbox is a good'un :D

Brilliant news, my fingers were beginning to ache. Just another 24 hours and I will be able to uncross them ;) ;)

Good luck,
John

I shall let you know. Going from an auto back to mine with a new clutch could be interesting!

You will mainly notice the first time you roll up to a junction with your clutch foot idle and the engine lurching and shuddering. That's usually what happens to me at the end of the road when I'm driving a manual ;)
