Castrol recomends
Edge 0W-30 or Magnatec 10W-40 for the rally car...

problem is, I need to decide which.... gven that it's going through the scorching Desert, 10W-40 (or thicker) may be better... right?

Or have I got this totally wrong?

I would've thought 15w-50, ow-30 sounds way off.

Ussually colder = thinner and hotter = thicker but there is a large overlap, so a 10/40 should be fine.

I am no expert, but I thin rally car, high revs and hot weather may see a W40 oil insufficent.

Have you an oil temp guage? How has it been in current weather?

My M104 engine has had 5W/40 oil for many years. It's done around 350,000 KM so I'm not surprised to hear a short clatter after I start the engine and before the oil's pumped up the hydraulic tappets.

But recently, the outside temperature has been super hot - 32C in the shade and the temperature guage in the car has been reading 45C until air starts circulating. Anyway, the point of all this is that at these high temperatures ('cold' oil at its thinnest) there is no clatter when I start the engine (even after several days without starting).

So what am I saying?

Possibly, that what my engine needs an oil that is thinner when cold and retains its viscosity when hot. How about 0W/50? Sounds ideal to me!

Comments welcomed.
