VW polo cambelt change price "O my god"

O my god part 2, just picked the car up, and they said all the exhaust is leaking and I asked how much for a new one, wait for it, £1000, because it has a cat converter.
anybody know a cheaper place to buy.

Euros.....

have pleasant surprise for once (sounds like you deserve one!) - go to Stainless Steel Exhaust Systems - Longlife Exhausts - find you nearest & call. Stainless steel at a price you will find nigh on impossible to equal (I hope!) eg - my SL needed a CAT - MB wanted nearly £1000 for a replacement mild steel job - price at Longlife £180 for a stainless one with lifetime guarantee

Had to buy a CAT for my son's Polo 1.4 TDi last year, probably similar to your's if not the same. Cost £120 buying online but seem cheaper now - buypartsby.com. Cambelts are a pain to do on these - no room plus tricky adjustment procedure.

In my experience of VW main dealers you need to take what they say with a huge pinch of salt and get someone sensible to look at the car. I have heard several stories about cars needing all suspension components changing or brake systems replacing and it turned out to be BS. Have you noticed it leaking? It may be a tiny insignificant leak or it may be repairable with a bit of welding. If you have a friendly local garage or tyre and exhaust place it is worth getting it on a ramp and having a look yourself; dont rush out to buy a whole new exhaust just yet.

I can highly recommend the chap that did my dads Skoda Fabia cambelt in Brentford. He's also a Mercedes nutter and an all round good bloke. I met him initially as he bought my LWB W123 off me and now we are good friends.

If you want me to PM you his number let me know.

Hi Sp!ke
Can you PM me his number. I am about to buy a skoda that is need of new cambelt. Thank you.

Cam belts, I hate them, I allways try to avoid cars with such a poor design.
Going to start a new Thread, what is the most someone has paid to change one of these horrid things

Bizarre to join a Mercedes forum because of a Skoda cambelt?!!

You need 30 posts before you can access PMs, btw.

He is a lurker on the forum - Masaker is his forum name I think.

I could share live video feeds to his workshop if you like :D

(actually that might be a bit foolish from a security perspective)

Have to say it's the cleanest workshop I've ever seen, seems to take a pride in his work.

Even better for me that I am a keyholder so can use his facilities out of hours :bannana:

Hi Spike adam 230 says he did it and it wasnt that hard, you say you have to move the engine to get in,
Im afraid everything comes down to money at the end of the day. Im not a tight ****, I was hoping to get it done for less than £300, but its peace of mind knowing that the jobs been done well, all the independants Ive phoned have Q me the top end of £300,

Can't believe it's really that much. I paid £200 for my A4's Cambelt replacement - genuine VAG parts. It went up to £240 because I had the waterpump changed and the aux-drive belt done at the same time - and that included the two bottles of coolant that were removed during the pump change!

Cheers,
Dan.

That was cheap, with the A4 you have to take the front bumper, radiator and crossmember off before you can do the cambelt. £400-£500 is fairly common I think.

Ok, so this might be the least-£20 quid, less I think, to buy and fit myself. The car was a '94 corrolla 1.3. took me about 4 hours start to finish.Very staightforward. What I did was set engine to tds, mark tipex all pulleys to alignment marks on block/head and the corresponding teeth on the belt.Remove belt, mark up new belt same as old(same number of pitches between marks,)fit belt, check all marks align as before.
