That was cheap, with the A4 you have to take the front bumper, radiator and crossmember off before you can do the cambelt. £400-£500 is fairly common I think.
The later 4 cylinder models are easier than the V6 versions hence Audi offering fixed price cambelt changes at £350 and £750 respectively when I asked for a quote last year.
Certainly on the V6 you do not have to remove the bumper and radiator although it makes access easier. On some models you can insert special tools to slide the bumper and radiator assembly forward and the pipework, wiring etc is designed to accommodate this.
