The electric aerial doesn't function. It's permanently stuck up. It makes a noise like a stuck motor when I switch the radio on or off.

Is it a common problem, with a simple fix, or any ideas on how to get an original replacement?

Many thanks, Howard

If you're a handy sort of a guy its worth taking it apart, i cured mine, all bunged up with dry muck, simply strip it down, clean & lube,re-assemble.

Get a Beru Aerial from either Euro or GSF... around £40 for top quality part that will fit straight away.

I thought the original aerials for the W123 were Hirschmann and you can purchase the mast separately.

Sounds like the gear has gone inside your aerial hence the motor making a noise and its stuck up.

Sometimes the nylon inside the stem breaks and also can cause the aerial to stick.

Please take a picture of your aerial and should be able to see what your existing aerial looks like and if there are any other tips I can give you.

Some years back I used to collect damaged aerials from the dealers in bulk load and repair them. Hence I have some knowledge in that area.

Now days the aerial seem to be built in the windscreen.

Hirschmann and Beru are just as good as each other..

Not worth replacing the mast when you can get a complete unit for £35-40..

Spoken to the local parts desk from Euro and GSF this morning. I'm probably asking the wrong questions - GSF said they dont stock aerials for any mercedes older than '85.

Euro's only electric aerial is by Ring.

I'm going to try Beru directly.

Any electric aerial will do the job, I can remember when MB dealers fitted radiomobile units, don't forget that MB's didn't come with radios or aerials so all were fitted by dealers, who often fitted what was easy to get from a local factor.

Exactly what I did, after I caught the aerial on the underside of my garage door, and bent it. Ooops!

It's a pretty simple job, just take care in removing the boot plastic liner, it's easy to crack, especially if the weather's cold. Maybe warm it up with a hairdryer?

I think my aerial came from ECP.

That's exactly why I'm changing it. It's stuck in the up position, and I'm gonna catch it on the garage door - or some oik will snap it off at the supermarket. Boot liner looks brittle - hair dryer sounds like a plan.
