W124 conversion 500SEL V8 ??

Hi all, my friend has a W124 300TE & a W126 500SEL he absolutely adores the V8 engine in the SEL but maintains that the 300TE is the best ever car he has ever had... he jokingly said I wish I could just wack the V8 lump into the 300TE, to which I seriously said, you can!

Now, was I wrong to say that?

Will it fit?

Is it a straight swap?

I read somewhere the cross-member may have to follow the V8 into the W124.

Looks to be quite a big job!

I did mention he might have to play about with the cross-member.

He has the time, money, land & his uncle is a mechanic, but it's just a case whether or not he can be ****d...

Why not get an m119?

I've been googling about & theres a bloke in Bulgeria who has done it on youtibe.

Still probably more hassle then it's worth

doesnt the the 500v8 of that age have around 220-230bhp? wouldnt it be easier to slot in a m104 3.2 straight 6 with similar power (although less torque) less surgery. or buy a 320te? however that would be boring

He bought the 500SEL to take back home (Germany) & restore to it's former glory, but after checking it all over it's looking to be a bit of a money pit, so he's pondering over whether to bail &/or chop & change engines about.

The autobox on the 300TE gave up a while back & has been sitting for some time, rather than mucking about with the gear & now that the SEL isn't looking too niffty it had crossed his mind to mix & match.

I think it would be a great MOD & interesting to tackle but to be honest I don't think he has the Cajones!
