W124 Engine bay wiring looms

Is that repairing or re-manufacturing, there's quite a difference in labour and wiring cost ?

I have had them sent to me for repair at around £150.00 to £400.00 depending how bad they were.

A new one with new multiplugs etc etc would be @ £1000.00 inc vat P&P etc etc

Does anyone know if the rhd and lhd looms are the same?

The length of the spur to the MAF connector differs, but not so badly that it can't be re-routed.
The very thick first section is longer on lhd, but this is just an awkward bit of extra bulk to lose somewhere when fitted to rhd, not a major problem.
Otherwise, if the model specs are the same, then so are the looms.

Hello Phileas..can you give me the details of the motor sport company you mention re repair/replace engine wiring harness
thanks Ray

Hi D
sorry to butt in but do you know if my loom just bought second hand from Germany part number 1244405232 will fit my Merc 280E 94 chassis 1240282C165302-1 or should I have got 1244405332?
Ray

Ray: it's easy to find the loom part number on your car,it's next to the battery

Also I wouldn't bother with a used loom,unless it's the updated version

Check this is correct. It wont enter the EPC.

Thanks a million folks. The loom I've bought from Germany looks fine (made in 2008 I believe) Can't verify the part number on the car as it has been messed around with and partly repaired. At the moment I've noticed an orphaned 2 pin plug close by the thermostat. It has nowhere to go as there's only the 1 pin plug for the temp guage and also the round plug. There is no socket for the 2 pin plug like in the picture if someone could tell me what its for I'd be very grateful

Hi there, on my w124 I had the same plug. I don't think you need to worry about it. I think it as for a couple models where it had an electro magnet to kick the cooling fan in like on the w123. Hope this helps
All the best

Hi Ray, sorry for the delay.
The guy that re-built my harness is called simon, runs a company called Si-Leck. You can contact him on 07831 262878 or email him on [email protected].
Decent chap, very helpful and I'd go back to him myself.

Hi all

Needed to chop some wires for sensors and lengthen wires etc.

Problem is I chopped the ecu plug and butchered the old wires so I am having a problem as to which wires to the ECT sensor match up.
I am trying to figure out what position on the ECU plug are the wires to the ECT as on the american one it has different colour wires and am left with 4 wires on the sensor which are totally different colours to the ECU.

I know a bit confusing but if you understand and can help ie with what position they are in or even if you have done the US to UK thing then please please please HELP .......lol :thumb:

Sorry forgot to say got a harness from USA from a LHD car.

Just another 'thumbs up' for Simon at Si-Leck.

Had my E280 loom done there, plus the ETA throttle body wiring which was, well let's say, past its best! Turn round is about two weeks at best, and when I spoke to him, I was immediately impressed with - 'yes, we do these all the time'. I'll let you get the price from him direct, but it was half what MB wanted for just the loom.

Small world, I'm in Kenilworth too :thumb: I'm just waiting for my loom and TB to come back from Sileck.

What are the symptoms?

Hi,

Can anyone describe some of the warning signs of a failing wiring loom?

I have a 1996 S124 E280 M104 which as far as I know is still on its original wiring. I've had no problems until now, apart from a couple of electrical hiccoughs recently on a very wet motorway run - I don't know whether to put that down to a bit of water getting in, or the beginning of something more serious.

Thanks

Poor running, idle, cruise control, ASR limp home, CEL and odd warning codes. If you're loom is shot it may be the cause but you won't know for sure, worth reading the codes. Mine wasn't playing up but was completely shot, it may have gone on for a few more yrs.........or not. So in my case preventative maintenance.

Check the loom, look around the injectors, coils and sensors for signs of failed insulation. Mine had the low tension wires replaced at some point, so they looked good, but they had been spliced into a failing loom. If it's starting to go my recommendation is sort it before it does play up. It can damage ECU's if it shorts.

If the engine loom is poor the chances are the throttle body and lower harness is as well, slice open a couple of inch's of insulation and take a look.

I've just had mine rebuilt by Si-leck and very happy too. It took around 3 weeks, came back nicely labelled, fitted perfectly and quick to install. The car started and settled into a good smooth idle, everything working fine.

A pic below of the lower harness. The insulation crumbles as you disturb it, it's pretty obvious when it's gone.
