W202 single wiper loose

Hi - I need some advice please.

I've a 1999 C180 Sport which I've owned for nearly nine years to the day.

Only two problems during that time. One was the alarm siren which refused to turn off and took nearly a week to die. Now the single wiper starts to come away as soon as it is used and quickly sticks in the rubber around the windshield.

It can be easily pushed back into socket and I would expect to hear some sort of retaining click, but nothing. Unlike most wiper assemblies the arm cannot be moved to a 90 degree angle to see the connection.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mike

Hello Mike, and welcome to the site... I have had my fair share of wiper problems on my 1994 C-class. Without seeing the problem it would be very difficult for anyone to diagnose the problem. Where about are you located?

if you turn you ignition off with the wiper in motion ypu should be able to stop it then more it 90 degreese and remove the mechinism cover! (the large bit at the bottem!) i suspect the pivit has come loose!

Your mechanism is broken because a gear inside the hub under the "turtel shell" cover is slipping on its shaft, the mechanism needs to be repaired or replaced, in the meantime you need to jam the mechanism under the “turtel shell” cover at the base of the blade.

You can use a lolly pop stick or similar, if the blade continues to strike the windscreen trim it will damage it and if the tip of the blade jam’s in under the windscreen trim it will cause damage a nylon gear inside the motor gearbox.
See… http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/bodywork/47227-w202-wiper-almost-fixed.html …read the whole thread.

Thanks Dec - that describes it in a nutshell. I'll go through the link. I'm using my wife's car in the meantime at the slightest chance of rain and will get a local Merc specialist to have a look at it, if it's beyond me.

That's great - now I've a chance to read both links, particularly your reply last year with the 3 options on how to repair the slipping. The lollipop stick seems rather better than I first imagined - fortunately we always have a good supply of lollies even in January.
