W211 E200 K - they don't make em like they used to, which is why it's been replaced with a 911 :)
Any ideas where I can get a recon Wiper Mechanism and Motor please?

A couple of months ago, my wife's 101,000 miler C Class wiper was fouling the drainage channel on the windscreen and basically ended up stuck in there.

Obviously first point of call was to have a search here and I found the excellent threads on taking the wiper mechanism apart and re-greasing it. My friend, who owns a garage, did the necessary and the problem seemed to be cured. Unfortunately it's doing it again. He did say at the time that it probably would because the mechanism appeared to be worn rather than just 'dry'. He's taken advice from a Merc specialist trade mate of his who suggests replacing the mechanism and the motor but he's not been able to source the bits yet and I need it sorting asap.

A quick call to the stealer and they too say that both items are replaced as a matter of course when this happens (due to the amount of work to strip it down), new parts are ~£550.

I've tried Mercland who have the bits but £250 seems a bit steep when they are just second hand and I assume could go themselves at any time. I would have thought max £100 for breakers part would be fair - I'd pay £250 for recondition I suppose.

Anybody know where you can buy recon units?

Thanks

Thanks Steve - difficult one to decide on, it's electrical, it's oily.........

Anyway, think I've sorted it.

Dronsfield Mercedes in Oldham do recon parts. They have a Wiper mech or £150 inc VAT. I can pick it up this afternoon and mate can fit it tomorrow!

They advised not changing the motor unless we'd been running it for ages catching.

Cheers

ps If you had a better solution, please waiti a few days before posting it so that I'm not too upset

I found a fix to the wiper problem

I have a C250 TD estate 1997. About one month ago the wiper blade was sticking in the 5 to 1 o'clock position on the screen. This cleared its self after about a week. Then last week the wiper blade began to park at the 1 o'clock position. In all other respects it worked perfectly.

After reading the threads about lubrication I removed the covers, cleaned and lubricated but this made no difference. Not wanting to spend a possible £500+ on getting such a silly problem fixed I decided to take the mechanism apart and look for a solution.

I found it and it is very simple to fix.

The whole mechanism was lacking is adequate lubrication. This includes the parts you cannot access by just removing the wiper actuator cover. Because the system had started to sease up, the spindle of the wiper motor had sliped on the linkage and so the blade was now parking in the wrong place.

What you need to do is as follows:

1.Raise the bonnet to its fully upright position. There is a catch on each bonnet hinge to do this.
2.Remove the 2 piece plastic trim at the bottom of the screen either side of the blade actuator.
3.Remove the retaining screws holding the second layer of one piece plastic trim and release the clips on the front edge to remove the trim complete. This is quite fiddley.
4.Now you have access to the wiper mechanism which is held in place with one bolt, two nuts and a plastic clip.
5.Unplug the electric cable and remove the assembly complete.
6.The the wiper motor should be in its parked position so try not to move its position. Undo the retaining nut on the spindle and you will probably see, as I did that the knarled end of the spindle has slipped within the first 5cm long linkage arm. To fix this, clean out the metal filings, ensure the wiper blade is in its parked position and re-assemble making sure the linkage arm is tapped into place and the nut well tightened to prevent further slippage.
7.Now you need to take apart, clean and lubricate everything you can get at.
8.Put it all back together and if you have set the blade properly, it will work and park as good as new.

To explore and work this all out it took me 3 hours. Given the car is only 7 years old I expect to be doing this again in probably 3 years time.

Probably the best first-post ever.

If it had some pics in it then it could be reformatted into a HOWTO thread :)

What kind of grease do you recomend for the mechanism??

Thanks,

Stu

I'm not into grease (apart from the musical)

I used what I had in the garage which was Zedmax C4 Energygrease BP. It looked like what had been used before.
