W210 E200 manual gearbox problem

Hi all,
I seem to have a problem with the 6 spd manual gearbox on my W210 E200. Sometimes it often refuses to go into 2nd gear and when it does gives a slight grating noise. There's no crunching so to speak so I imagine its something to do with the linkage. Is this common? I imagine unsympathic previous owners have been forcing it into reverse without lifting the gear stick up.

Would it only be a matter of adjusting the gear linkage or are we talking big bucks?

Welcome to the forum.

I think those gearboxes use 2 cables instead of a linkage, have you checked the oil level?

Many thanks for the quick reply! No I haven't as of yet.
Is there a "Fill hole" at one side of the gearbox which will allow you have a look at the oil level?
Or is it something more complex? I didn't consider a low oil level being the issue because it goes fine into every other gear.

Yep filling bung half way up the gearbox, but which side I cant remember.
