Took the switch out and opened it up. There are four wires to the switch, brake light power in and switched out, and two others whilst unsure of the source and output they make contact when the brake is not being pressed. Inside the switch is a small metal contact which makes the connection, it is this that had snapped. It's very thin and can only have a limited life. Not possible to repair so put it back together leaving the two non brake light wires off and temporarily shorted to prevent the warnings, although this will probably mean cruise won't turn off with brake press. Will get a new one ordered tomorrow.
