- E220-CDI Classic 2008 manual saloon
If you’re doing an inlet manifold clean on a manual, facelift W211 (2007 – on) with the OM646 220 CDI, the following is worthy of mention.
The Haynes C-Class 220 manual doesn’t cover everything – but read it for the basics
Pre-facelift (pre-OM646) engines use a different manifold
Things you’ll need : -
- 5-litres of carb-cleaner (dissolves sludge pretty effectively – no jetwash required)
- Mercedes antifreeze
- Ionised water
- Inlet manifold to cylinder head O-rings
- EGR unit to cylinder head gasket
- Thermostat housing O-ring
- Right-angle tooth-pick tool (ie – bent tooth-pick with handle) to clean sludge in manifold ports
Things to note :
- Before starting, start the engine and move the interior heater to max, then turn straight off
- Depressurise the fuel system by removing the yellow fuse in the boot fusebox and turning the engine a few times to check it doesn’t run and to dissipate fuel pressure
- You WILL have to remove the EGR assembly to remove the manifold
- The EGR assembly’s held in place by a frame that also secures the EGR outlet pipe to the charge-air tract
- Move the steering pump out of the way by slackening the belt, removing its mounting bolts and pushing it out of the way
- There are 8 manifold bolts – the lower ones will need a mirror to see properly
- You don’t need to disconnect the starter solenoid connection
- You don’t need to unbolt the engine dipstick at its base, just unbolt it at the top
- There is no engine drain-plug (Mercedes blanked it with a plastic cap) – simply drain via the rad ‘bottom’ hose
- Sludge was limiting my swirl-flap free movement to about 25%
- Cleaning restores it to 100%
Be organised – use plastic change-bags from the bank (and insert a reminder note) for groups of fasteners - and also with plastic-wire to cover the ends of pipes.
Be safe – put the front wheels on ramps or old rims, so no falling off jacks or stands to trap you or render you disabled.
