W211 battery error message

Dan,
I'm going to be replacing the Battery Control Module in my car (2004 Mercedes E320 4matic), and I'm assuming that the electronics in my car will have to be reset, since this unit is connected directly to the rear battery. This is what I've found in the Owner's Manual:

"The following procedures must be carried out following any interruption of battery power (e.g. due to reconnection):
- Set the clock (page 143, See COMAND operator's manual)
- Resynchronize the side windows (page 200)
- Resynchronize the sliding/pop-up roof (page 204) or the panorama sliding/pop-up roof (page 209)"

saorbust also added "Don't forget to reset the ABS system by turning the wheel all the way from left to right and back again"

Is there any more to it?

Thanks in advance.

The steering wheel angle sensor is actually more for ESP but your list looks complete (or would memory seats need resync?).

But how did you end up to the conclusion that the BCM needs to be replaced? If it isn't dead, I thought the usual fix is a SW update (a new part could even have an old SW).

Thanks Diesel Benz. I'm not worried about the memory seats too much, as I'm the only one who gets to drive it. :p

I got the red battery message with "Visit Workshop", so I took the car to the stealership to have them check the electrical system. They said both of the batteries (main & aux) and the alternator are fine and that the BCM is at fault. I mentioned the recall (200506008) with the software update, and they claim that according to the Vehicle Master Inquiry it has been done, so replacement is the only solution, and that the recall does not cover replacement. They want $905 for parts & service, and I'm pretty sure that I can replace the BCM myself for $300-$400. Even if I have to go back to the stealership for them to update the software, it should still save me at least $300.

I want to make sure I know what I'm getting into before I start taking a wrench to it though... I don't want a seemingly easy fix to cause bigger issues with the electrical system (these days, Mercedes are pretty sensitive when it comes to electronics).

Here's another forum that deals with the red battery message issue:

hi there, i recently purchased a second hand Merc e220 w211 (2005) and this message appears every saint day : BATTERY PROTECTION. CONVENIENCE FUNCTION UNAVAILABLE.
I changed the auxiliary battery ... but nothing.
So i bought a delphi car diagnose system that helped me to identify the problem :
BATTERY ENERGY CONTROL MODULE - BSG211 ---> DTC : 9051 CONSUMER SHUTOFF STAGE 1(PERMANENT) and second problem DTC: 9050 CONSUMER SHUTOFF, STAGE 2(INTERMITENT).
After erasing them, they still appear . But the problem that i have now is this one : i physically inspected the module at the back of the trunk but the part number is not the same as the one that is stated by Delphi.
So, on the back, in the trunk i have A211 540 42 45 (that has a hand made hole in the casing and a white wire attached to mother board) but Delphi is reading from the ECU the following PART NUMBER : A211 442 01 55 .
please help me

So how old is your main battery ?? Have you connected a multimeter across the terminals of the battery to check the charging rate ? It might be that eather the main battery is on its last legs or the alternator requires attention.

Steve
