W211 E320cdi 7G poor consumption

I've had two injectors changed as tests showed that they were leaking off and still my car has poor consumption, smokes too.

Will save up and change the other 4 I think and see if that sorts things....

Seems like there's a lot of variation between cars too.

Odd, isn't it?

There ought to be some sort of benchmark standardised real world test that you could use to check MPG, like 5 miles at a steady speed on a rolling road type of thing.

Agree with the odd variation returns on the same model.

I've had regular visual returns of 50 − 60mpg on long runs, sticking at around 60mph. I'll guess the actual returns may be lower, but that's still good.

Had two injectors and a thermostat changed in the last year, that's it.

Same journey. Same duration.same average speed.
I have the computer advised that I have fitted new air filters and I got 40.7mpg.

And given that I was driving in uber hypermiling mode I can't believe that I can't get more than 40.7mpg.
Even my 4 wheel drive 4x4 I could get 43mpg on the exact same journey

It really is strange that keith who has a c320 cdi with a 7g box like yours gets 47mpg, i know the 211 is heavier but even so thats quite a difference.

How about tyre pressures? what do you run yours at?

35 front 39.5 rear. They are like rock and the fuel consumption is the same as it was at 32 all round

I think Keiths is mapped too but the difference is so huge I can't see it being that. Even the wildest claims for mpg improvement are only 20%

Has yours got a DPF??

They can use around 10% extra.

I believe mine does have a dpf but I believe Keiths is the same year so I assume it has one too

What tyres are you using?

I had terrible consumption on Continentals, Michelin PS2s saw it climb.

Remapped cars are usually the least accurate on the OBC.
Star can recalibrate the OBC but no one bothers.

Without tank to tank measurements this thread is useless.

I find Continental's give very good mpg on my old W220.

Better than many out there, but a long way behind PS2s, and the Michelins in turn are way behind things like the new Dunlop Effcientgrips.

Also, Contis tend to go hard quickly and get get noisy. I will never buy them again and used to swear by them.
I complained to Continental about my Conti Sport Contacts going hard and cracking and they told me I had left them in the sun too long. WTF!!!? they are tyre, they are on my car, my car sits outside in the sun. :D

I had Dunlop's on the W220 before the continentals.

Considering I can achieve over 55mpg repeatedly from aS320cdi, I can't imagine it getting much better.

I have very minimal noise and they are still soft and grip well. The rears are nearly at 2mm now so they have had a good life.

I always brim then brim again when i want the accurate mpg

You've done well then.

I have given them 3 chances recently, they were crap on the S211, even worse on the S212 (so noisy!!) and then had them on an S203 I bought and they were noisier than the Dunlop Winter 4Ds that replaced them.

I used to love them, but not anymore.

I have Bridgestone s-02 on the back and firestone sz90u on the front

comparing the C280 against the E280 I came up with the following figures, they are all worst case

Weight difference +4.428%
Mapping difference +20%

this is comparing the W203 against the S211.

Add in my 35mpg and that means assuming the above figures the C280 should get 43.86mpg. I believe Keith is getting more than this with normal driving and my 35mpg is with hypermilling style driving, slow accelleration and max speed of 56mph, ensuring its in top gear, planning ahead and disengaging cruise control and using engine braking to slow rather than braking.

I have my tyres hard as rock and it made no difference.
