W211 E320cdi 7G poor consumption

I have Bridgestone s-02 on the back and firestone sz90u on the front

Really?

I would never mix brands, and certainly not a symmetrical tyre with an asymmetrical tyre, does it ever feel twitchy in the wet or do you see the traction light?

comparing the C280 against the E280 I came up with the following figures, they are all worst case

Weight difference +4.428%
Mapping difference +20%

this is comparing the W203 against the S211.

Add in my 35mpg and that means assuming the above figures the C280 should get 43.86mpg. I believe Keith is getting more than this with normal driving and my 35mpg is with hypermilling style driving, slow accelleration and max speed of 56mph, ensuring its in top gear, planning ahead and disengaging cruise control and using engine braking to slow rather than braking.

I have my tyres hard as rock and it made no difference.

What am I missing here?

Why are you comparing a C Class with an E Class?

Where is the info on 'Keiths' car?

Only had the car since the beginning of may. Those were the tyres that were fitted.

Tc will light up on hard accelleration if wet and if you accelerate hard and corner for example out of a junction is is a bit squirrelly but not bad and esp fixes it within milliseconds.

I try to drive as slowly as poss given my 35mpg I Darenth imagine what it would drop to if I drove hard all the time

Little bit lost on the c280 buddy as its a c320 cdi 3.0 v6

The info on keiths car was on another thread gIzzE

I would try and get them matched when they run out, there is a lot of torque and RWD with mixed tyres on these ruins them.

Hey?

Sorry, I am getting really confused here?

I don't see what a C280 W203 has to do with an S211 E320cdi?? :dk:

I'm talking in circles lol the c280 (that turned into a c320 lol) factored in as in another thread Keithjg reported getting high 40's mpg easy and mid 50's with a bit of effort and that is running the same v6 engine as mine.

Merc85 also achieves similar figures in his i6 e320

I can't get above 40 even with hypermiling. The local indy told the car it had new air filters and that day I got the 40.7mpg but today it's back to 36mpg

The C280 W203 was a petrol, there was no 280 diesel?

My bad, merc85 said it was the same engine and gearbox as mine. I made the wrong assumption.

Interesting about the DPF. How much are they to remove? My cars been remapped- would it need another remap or just the DPF deleting via star?

Thanks

Jon

I doubt it has dpf as it was an extra. Mines been mapped and because I don't do lots of miles as walk to work! Mine is averaging 27mpg but on the motorway between Hinckley and Leicester which is around 7 miles it used to do 31ish mpg now after map around 35mpg at high speed. The longer it's on the motorway it seems to keep rising. Will know when go on hols in September.

Sadly it really does have a DPF, amongst a huge amount of extras fitted. Someone really went to town on my car- shame they added this too....

Most of the V6 cdis got the DPF.

My facelift e320cdi estate didn't have one, I averaged 36mpg.

The E350cdi 212 estate I had after did and that averaged just under 33mpg.

The 350cdi struggled to hit 40mpg no matter how I drove it, as I posted before my E320cdi 211 (no dpf) would see 48mpg.

I think tyres and breathable engine makes the most difference.

When Fiona got her 320d touring auto it was on 17" 225 wide tyres, they were efficient Dunlops, I swapped the wheels to 19" 245 wide Falken FK453 tyrs on BBS CH alloys.
On the standard 17" wheels the car was averaging 49mpg, the moment we swapped it dropped and dropped and ended up averaging 39mpg!!!

I swapped back again and it was back at 49mpg once more.

In the end I settled on 18" M3 wheels on 245 tyres, but went Michelin, this saw and average of 44mpg.

Having mixed, cheap, crap tyres on your car is the first thing I would change.

Really! When looking for mine I was under the impression it was a factory option and most thank god didn't have one.

Mine has one :-(

Depending what kind of driving you're doing, weight of wheels & tyres could be much more important than the rolling tyre resistance.

Unsprung mass is especially important if doing lots of stop start journeys around town etc. If doing regular long runs, a harder compound tyre with less resistance (usually non directional tyres) would be more beneficial.

I've now tried 2 sets of wheels with the same size tyres and same brand/model etc. One set of wheels weighs between 2 and 3 kg lighter on each corner. Surprisingly the difference has been quite large. Handling is mildly improved, ride is definitely better and economy is reporting an improvement but I'll wait until I've done at least 3 tank to tank measurements to be sure of that.

As a side note, some tyres are much much heavier than others. I had wrongly presumed that tyres would all be similar in weight...I was very wrong. Bridgestones we weighed were almost 2kg more than continentals in a 245/45/18 size.

Ok,

So i have the full AMG kit on my S211 320cdi with the staggered wheels running Conti 3's. The car has been laser aligned at Blackboots so is in tolerence.

Can I buy a bypass pipe for the DPF from a car without one? Anyone got a part no?
