Hi,
I have just purchased an E55 Steering Wheel for my W211 Benz and want to know the Torque setting for the re-apply?
I have read on places its 80 Nm but want to confirm!

I also picked up AMG Tred Plates for the front and need the part number for the white plastic clips that hold them in place?

Any help is much appreciated!

Kind Regards,
Christian

Can't remember the torque setting for the wheel but if you're doing it by the book you're supposed to replace the nut each time.

Ok, that's interesting! So to answer your question no i am not doing it by the book!
But i still want it torqued so its safe and wont jeopardize the car.

Just checked for you, it's 80Nm ...not BFT :)

The bolt has a slick of preapplied blue threadlock on it which I think may be the reason they say to replace it.

Thank you E270 Owner that was plan B.
Thank you b1g1an for the confirmation, i would also assume that's the reason why they want you to replace it, it should be ok only torqued and not threadlocked!

I think i will make a How To Guide for this, (seeing i am removing my steering wheel), for the forum so it has an official guide and the information is easier to find/ access!

Kind Regards,
Christian

Assume you have the gist of what you're doing but just in case...

If you have electric wheel, move it out so you can easily access the rear of it.

Disconnect battery to be on the safe side, don't want the airbag going off or any faults on the dashboard that would need clearing by a dealer.

Remove two bolts from rear of wheel that hold the airbag.

Pull airbag away from wheel and remove two airbag connectors, a pick comes in handy to lift the locking clip, and the connector to the buttons.

Put airbag somewhere sensible!

Unplug the cable that goes through the hole in the wheel from the connector block.

Remove hex bolt from centre of wheel, this will need a lot of force if the threadlock has been undisturbed but be warned, it goes very slack when the threadlock lets go!

Installation is the reverse of removal etc but don't forget to reset the windows and steering sensor after reconnecting the battery.

Hope that helps and I didn't forget anything important.

Done, i will make a howto guide with Pics! Thanks again B1gian my research can happily be confirmed by your information thanks.

Keep an eye on this thread for the guide and pics of the interior as i am planning a few nice additions to my car.

Does anyone know of the part number for those clips, by any chance?????

Kind Regards,
Christian

As far as I can see they're held on by plugs which are A0019976535.

Thank you i will see if the dealership has any of them!
Will keep you posted!

If they haven't they should be able to get them from Milton Keynes in a few days, they're around £1.50 each.

MB parts service is pretty good, although BMW can get you virtually anything overnight and it's only a couple of days if it has to come from Germany, but virtually anything, however obscure, is available.

If you are going to do a "how To", remember to leave the central nut in place by a couple of turns of thread *before* you yank on the steering wheel.

This will prevent you bashing yourself in the face with it. (according to my mate Dave :o)

Very true with other cars I've had, but on the CLS it wasn't stuck to the splines like they usually are, possibly there's no taper on these and there is on others?

Definitely worth suggesting though in case I was just lucky with mine although the surprise of the bolt suddenly coming loose nearly had a similar effect with the socket bar flying round!

I remember taking the steering wheel off my old Civic. It took my brother and I together to yank that thing off lol.

Hi Guys,
Thanks again b1g1an, will keep that in mind, i should be installing the tred-plates next week so i will update it then if i need those clips, but thanks again!

Sp!ke, i forgot about that but its now added into the How To. The document is written but i need to take the pictures, so tomorrow i will take them and finalize the document.

Its going to be fun weekend of OEM modding my car (one of my favorite hobbies, my car is now FAR from stock) and it could use a good clean too!

I also picked up a good CLS (face lift style) gear shift knob to replace the ugly wood one, so just a small mod that just gives the car a more fresh, more up to date look!

Look out for pics Tomorrow!

Hi Guys,
Firstly thanks to all who have contributed during my absence!

Just wanted to give everyone an update, so i attempted to install the wheel yesterday but to my great disgust i had the wrong driver bit to remove the centre bolt, so i need to go and by and Allen key style driver bit, aughhh! otherwise it would have been an easy 10 minute job!
Anyways, i will try again today or Monday, depending on how busy i get!

The guide is half done with pics just have to do the steering wheel removal images and then i will upload it for everyone to use.

Hope you guys have an awesome weekend.

Hi Everyone,

The last piece of my puzzle arrived today, Being the AMG Tred Plates and i am very excited.

My How To Guide is coming along nicely, i have not changed the wheel as i had purchased the wrong tools. I have now got the right ones so i can commence with the swap, probably tonight if time allows!

Here are some pics to tide yourselves over while you wait for the big guide!

Enjoy!
