Hi

My wife fancies a 7 seater for our next car - so 211 estate it is then.

I've recently seen one with the eletcric boot floor option;

(a) is this compatible with the 7 seat set up?
(b) how easy is it to retro-fit the rear seats?
(c) how much (roughly) do the rear-facing seats cost?

a) No. They are exclusive - one or the other but not both, I'm afraid.
b) Parts are available - there are threads on here giving more info - what parts are required etc - do a search!
c) Not cheap.
d) You will incur the wrath of Glojo if you bin a perfectly good electric floor system in favour of a 7-seat conversion!!!

Please think long and hard as to why you want 7 seats.
I`ve had 7 seats for 120,000 miles and never used them!
If I did the luggage would have to go on the roof !!

Glojo must be holiday, so hurry up and he'll not notice:D

With the electric floor do you get the deep storage underneath?

Not sure if If my dad has ever had a need for an electric floor and his has carried so much stuff over his 5 years of ownership.

Bit like the motorised tail gates nice if you have it second hand but wouldn't spec it.

I guess thats what options are though...some YOU like some you don't..

:)

What model are you looking at?

It's for ferrying around kids and family. the C43 is effectively a 4 seater at the moment as the kids' seats take up so much room;

- When my mother visits from Scotland we have to take 2 cars if we want to go somewhere
- my wife's best girfriend doesn't drive - with a 7 seater they could have a week away with the kids and the dads can stay in London
- when we visit family in Norfolk and Dorset we see them using their 7 seaters (Touran and Peugeot 307?) and very useful they are too with 4 or 6 kids plus mates wanting to do a variety of things

If I did the luggage would have to go on the roof !!

I've got the roof box.....seriously, though, the 7 seat option is not for long journeys - more for ferrying kids about at either end

Regards

Well I was originally looking at E500's but having read about the 320 CDI with Brabus chip I might even go down the diseasal route.

But I'd want one with all the toys as I've got used to AMG specs and the alternative C32 would be loaded.

So apart from Xenons, Bose (or equivalent), dimming mirrors and auto wipers I'd like to get some E Class-only features;

- Air suspension - so I can waft if the mood takes me or crank it up when the car is full of camping gear in the back, with a roof box on top and bikes on the back....
- 7 Seat option so I can turn it into a kids' bus

That's about the spec on mine, and I have added DVD, PS2 MP4 and screens in the headrests and on the boot lid to keep the kids amused.
The 320cdi is as beast of an engine, so dont automatically assume that you will need the chip, try it first then decide.

Wholeheartedly concur.

The E320CDI sports a good deal more torque than the E500 (not the E55, mind), and the kids in the back (rearward-facing remember) are still thrown hard against their straps on a fast take-off.

You don't want them disappearing out through the rear window altogether, do you?!! :D

P.S. I'm amazed Glojo hasn't picked this one up yet!!

Glojo seems to be away.

Hello again Chattonmill - last time we spoke it was about AV. I FINALLY did something about it yesterday - 1xSony 7inch portable DVD player, 2xSony neck band headphones and 1Xbungee cord to hold the player against the back of the armrest et voila - an install :)

Cheap and crude but it works and I've got something to keep the kids amused on trips in the car/on planes/in hire cars/whilst we're putting our new tent up etc.......

BTW have you got air suspension?

I have the air suspension on my E500 (albeit a saloon) and it is very nice. The only word of caution is to check the front struts.

One of my front struts failed towards the end of June and I am still waiting for the part.

On the subject of the 320 Cdi engine, I have now managed to get the corsa upgraded to a CLS 320 CDi, it has a lot of torque in normal guise, so must be amazing once its been Brabus chipped.

If I had known you were going that route I have a spare DVD player with twin screens that you could have taken off my hands!
I do have the air suspension yes, it is well worth getting if you can.
To be honest I cant see the need for the electric floor, but each to their own!

I wanted the electric tailgate and floor for a couple of reasons (and to make up for Glojo's absence...):

Floor - I still gig on a fairly regular basis, and with a back injury it would have made loading/unloading racks nice and easy. I checked one out at Brooklands and it handled the weight OK and made life very easy - but when I was looking last year it was only available as an option on the AMG.

Tailgate - Mrs E never shuts them properly and I hate the massive "slam" that she or the kids invariably give it. Plus I can even send the smallest of the kids to go out in the rain to jump up and hit the button - she loves doing it too. Mrs E also said that the tailgate was really heavy and was a pain to open and close, so a no-brainer tick on the option list.

is this just for fun since you can do that with the key and from the driver's door?

the 7 seats are very useful for those times you need an extra person in the car. remember though that there is a max weight/size limit of the people who can sit in them IIRC.

i have used mine several times but dont very often, but wouldnt like to be without them now - especially when on holiday with inlaws and we can just take 2 cars instead of 3.

i'd definatly get a car with them already fitted as they are expensive to retrofit, but fairly easy to do.

Oh no! Oh well serves me right for doing nothing for 12 months and then buying something on impulse.

Don't suppose you've got a 16 inch wheel Specialized Hardrock kids bike lying around (before I go and buy one tomorrow)?

Never mind, it just kind of hangs around in case the Missus wants to do a long trip and take her Golf....Although New plans are to get rid of that and the W208 and buy a W209 Convertible instead!
If you can get a deal she wants a Specialised Dolce I think it is......but no help on the hardrock I am afraid!
