W212 E63 AMG S worth it over the normal AMG?

I've noticed recently that like for like on miles and year that, at least on AT, the S models are often near enough the same price as the std model anyway.....

Yes the S from memory has about and extra 20 odd horsepower and a bit more torque but, it also has beefed up bushes etc which give it a much harder ride compared to the non S car. I was fortunate enough to drive both before buying the non S car back in 2015 as I much preferred the more compliant ride.

Again, not worried about the cost of ceramics :) The benefits trump the cost in my opinion however I’ll doubt a car will come up for sale with them fitted.

Looks like the S is the preferred choice. Question is, how long will I have to wait for one to pop up for sale……
If you're not worried about the cost of ceramics, why don't you look at the 2017+ S213 E63S? It's a better car all round.

.....and the 212 (in both PFL and FL shapes) is far better looking that the "slightly melted" 213 with far less unnecessary electronics and screens to got wrong in a few years time making life way easier for the DIYer......just in my opinion of course!! YMMV

I agree that externally the 212 is a far nicer looking car than the 213.
But the inside and dash of a 213 is in another world away from the dated looking 212. IMO of course.
What I'm not convinced about is the £20k mark up between a 2016 212 and a 2017 213 with similar mileages.
To me,that shows a 212 is still somewhat a bargain buy.

Must be my age....I like real switches and real dials....so much easier to use without taking our eyes of the road too.....I wonder how many accidents are caused by people trying to get through layers of screen options to adjust what they need...when they should be looking where they are going???? As far as I can see all lots of touch screen and extra ECUs will do is send cars to the scrap yard rather sooner......but yes they look very nice and modern!!

Highly subjective topic. I love the 213 exterior, especially the aggressive front end. I hate the 212, particularly the pre facelift. The 213 interior is alright but not that well made and I prefer real dials too rather than slab screens.

I believe that the 2018 W213 E 63 S AMG will prove to be peak E-Class AMG. Future models will be faster, older models will have more character, but 2018 will prove to be the best balance. All IMHO of course.

Before I bought my 212 I was actually going to get a 213 , but just happened to find an s model , 1 owner 16k miles. Sadly it wasn't an estate and the options didn't include distronic or dynamic seats which I wanted.
Apart from just 20 or 30hp, is there a factory LSD on the s. I think you could possibly save a heap of cash on the non s especially if you're not pushing the car hard all the time you may not notice any difference. You can always fit an LSD and ecu tune it.

There may be some suspension tweaks from reading up on forums at the time?
I think it is down to personal preference and the difference in £££ with what's on the market between s and non s. There's not many s models in the UK MERCEDES AMG E63 S AUTO - How Many Left?. Last autumn loads came on sale probably because of the petrol prices hike but they've been taken off the market

When thinking about 212 vs 213 The 213 has much better tech, the 360 camera, UI etc. Literally everything tech wise in the 213 makes for a much improved experience. but if you're not into that, the 212 is very nice and analogue in comparison. The big difference is AwD vs RwD. I was happy to stick with rwd in the end. In terms of reliability the 212 has been brilliant except I think a sensor needs to be replaced which shouldn't be an issue and the AC compressor needed replacing. The 213 with performance exhaust (pre facelift) is very loud but with the huge saving , you can get a capristo on your 212 haha. However current prices are just plain crazy on the 213s at the moment vs early 2021 when I was shopping for a car

The ride on the 212 s is very very nice too. It rides on 19s and i stuck on mps4s on the front a few days ago and it feels very plush. The pre facelift 213 is probably firm in comparison

Looking at a 2014 onwards E63 AMG estate to replace are R class.

I have seen a few E63 AMG S variants pop up for sale a few times over the past 18 months. Are they worth the extra premium over the standard AMG?
I had one for three years and its the Limited Slip diff that is worth the difference. Extra Power is worth nothing without control.... P.

+1.
These engines have proven longevity. Check the US forums. Some owners with 150k+ and going strong.
Agreed, bought mine on 50,000 miles over 4 years ago, it's now on 105,000 miles & drives just as well as it did when i bought & i've had no serious issues - with all the power available on tap the engine is never really put under any stress & feels like it will last forever..

Yes it's all just a matter of taste with no wrong or right answer. I actually like the PFL front end.....possibly the most angry looking AMG E to my eyes!
