W220 water in Plenum Chamber

At least I think so.

I'd heard quite a lot about this being a problem when water collects and then spills over into passenger footwell and screwing with the electrics so I had a look today.

At the rear of the engine bay, passenger side and below the louvered bonnet vent there is a plastic box about 3 inches deep and 8 or so wide, I can see water at the bottom of the box through the vents on top:

  • Is this the plenum chamber?

  • How do I get the top off?

  • If I poke around with a long handled screwdriverwill I be able to clear any blockage?

I did unscrew 3 screws on the front of the box but that just releases some kind of little Bosch gadget.

Thanks in advance.

Push a screwdriver into the box and push out the rubber grommet.

Drill a hole (20mm) into the side of the box (the is an MB re-call)

It is not a plenum chamber just a rain water collector and outlet.

Thanks!

The grill on top of the chamber unclipped and I poked a screwdriver into the bottom and unblocked the outlet, there was only about an inch in there but better to clear now than when it's too late.

Not drilled a hole yet as it is now unblocked but will keep an eye on it and know what to do if it blocks again.

Thanks again, a potential problem stopped in it's tracks.

Are all W220's affected or was it addressed on facelifted models? What year is your W220 lewyboy?

I'll have a look anyway, it wont hurt to clear it out if its blocked.

Mine is the facelift, as you say it will do no harm to check.

Thanks lewboy, mine is a facelift as well. Will take a look when i can...

Thanks
