Ways to save money on fuel??

On the carrying less extraneous weight I recently read of recommendation that if you have large fuel tank on your car + do a lot of stop start journeys that you should routinely run with a 1/2 full to empty fuel capacity--- all that extra fuel weighs quite a lot?? This would of course take nerves of steel in today's fuel shortage panic environment.

More to the point, why are we all just accepting the prices? In less than 18 months petrol has gone up more than 50p yet its never mentioned on telly or in papers for more than a day!

I looked at some figures going back to 18 months ago. Crude oil prices have risen by 34% over that period as well. According to WhatGas, average unleaded price is now 128.8p, and eighteen months ago was about 104p. That's a product price rise of 24%.

Never found the cost of 98/99 RON outweighing the benefits. The scooby had to be run on it of course and I found Tesco 99 the best. I could actually do a fair few more miles than on V-Power.

Smoothly does it is the way forward but the best one is if you can dodge sitting in traffic. I use the Park & Ride a lot to get into Edinburgh because I'd rather spend £2.40 return for the bus and let it cruise down the green lanes than spend 45 mins sat in traffic (each way) to cover 10 miles.

I have a feeling the movie called "Mad Max" might eventually become a reality :)

Worth bearing in mind that the total tax on, for example, diesel is now about 80p per litre. If that doesn't sound too much remember that is over £3-60p on each and every gallon just for the tax.

Slightly at variance to the thread, but with the government taking 80p litre in various taxes on fuel and £40+ billion a year in VED, the article I read in one weekend paper that pot holes were here to stay because budgets for road repairs are being cut seems ludicrous on two counts.
One, surely road users are paying enough in tax to expect a great facility, and two, if roads are allowed to deteriorate further we'll stop using them and tax take will reduce.

Nerrrrr, mines clearer! :p

At this rate of fuel cost increase, it is getting towards the cut-off point where the damage cause to the CDI engine by using WVO is worth it in saved fuel costs. :( Mental, but true...

At what point does it become worth the risk?

How much is a new HP pump for a CDI? How much do I spend a year on fuel?

Without wanting to start a war, I have 2 questions.

Is the damage referred to straight forward wear due to less lubricity of WVO?

Does anyone know the volatility of WVO relative to Diesel? By that I mean the tendency to evaporate (the way that petrol does).

...back in 99 when petrol was hitting lower prices than now and there was outrage and national nightmares at the pump, there was a group of fuel protestors that set up some kind of malarchy for challenging corporations or something equally brave....loads of people signed up....nowt happened? They were expecting to negotiate 'deals' for their members for cheaper petrol I think?

Whatever happened to that?

It never got off the ground, they couldn't seem to get commercial support for it despite signing up thousands of members from just about every motoring forum around.

Two questions:
  • How much should a litre of fuel cost (please show your working out)?
  • What action do you propose we take in order to achieve this price, and what have you done so far?

I dont know how its all calculated so I cant show any working out, but I know that a litre of fuel should never have 80/90p tax on it.

My point is, its basically accepted and not even commented on for the most part in the media yet its crippling the country.

On Chris Evans this morning: predicted fuel cost by the summer - £8/gallon.

And where exactly does this info come from?,imho it's just the government putting the price hike rumours out early so we aren't suprised when they actually happen & just cough up without much of a complaint & no action as a nation.

This is exactly the thing; what will people do about it? I'll tell you- nothing.
The right to protest is being slowly taken away from people, which also creates apathy towards issues that should be aggressively opposed.
Part of the problem is the 'I'm all right, Jack' society that is, quite frankly, decimating community identities. That goes for all walks of life aswell, not just the 'working classes'....

You might not spend money on diesel/petrol but i can promise you that the rising cost of the aforementioned will affect you & everyone else in this country one way or another.
