I am going to get my car serviced and not sure what ratio oil to use as there are many different oils the dealers say they use 5/30 in thier newer cars and 5/40 in the older ones can anyone shed any light on this i will be using Mobil 1 oil Thanks

Just checked on the castrol website by keying in my registration and it picked out EDGE TURBO DIESEL OW-30? confused now

ive got a w210 e320 cdi and i use 0/40 mobil 1 turbo diesel oil . As i do about 1000 miles a week ive found it quite good and doesn't go all thin and loose its body like some oils ive used.

Autodata states 10w/40 for your car. Ive used Comma Syner-D 5w/40 in my C250TD and now my C220cdi for years. Its a full synthetic diesel specific oil and it meets MB229.3 (stated on the packaging) along with BMW Longlife and VW 505 00.
About £30 for five litres.
Edge 0w/40 is very expensive, and if I remember correctly, only comes in 4 litre cans. If you had a car that revved to 10,000 and spent its life doing so, then fine, otherwise your wasting your hard earned!

i get the mobil 1 in 5 litre cans from halfords and its not too dear because i have a trade card . I only use the best oil because i use and abuse my car for work and do stupid amount of miles in it every week 1000+.

is the 0/40 oil thicker than 0/30

The figures relate to the oils 'Viscosity' ie. its ability to flow. Water will pour from a cup faster than treacle. Water could be said to be '0' viscosity and treacle , say, '100'. And so it is with oil.

So the answer is yes, 0/40 is thicker than 0/30, but only marginaly so.

In this country, 10w/40 is more than adequate, and in my car (C220 cdi) is suitable for temparatures between approximately -20 and +40 centigrade, so the 5w/40 Im currently using far exceeds what I really need.

I only ever use mobil1 0w/40 in my ML 270CDI and on one occasion i went to 22k miles on the same oil (due to unavoidable circumstances) and when i drained the oil the viscosity was practically the same as when it was first put in, it still had a silky smooth 'oily' feel to it.

Halfords currently have a 20% discount offer on mobil1, approx £38 for 5 litres.

Got my service done today from a local kwik fit garage i told them to use a 5/40 oil and they said this was a upgrade oil (which would be charged for) i kept an eye on the guy to see what he was doing he was looking around at some oil cans which said 5/30 and 5/40 on them and when he went to fill the car up with oil he used the oil in the drum. He quoted me £10 a litre to upgrade the oil then he did not charge me for it when he billed me i took this up with management saying i dont believe that thier drum contains 5/40 oil (my word againt thiers). When he was showing me he oil options at the start he showed me that Mobil1 10w/40 was thier standard trade oil obviously cheaper for them. i cannot prove what oil they have put in but i believe it is 10/40. My question is would this cause any damage to my car should i drop the oil again and get a 5/40 oil in before i get possible engine damage. I must say the car drives and feels a lot smoother but still a bit unsure? Why wouldnt they charge for a upgrade oil if they used it? I believe he must have forgot what i asked him to do?

Some one must have views on using 10/40 semi?

Thanks renault12ts
I was hopeing that somone that was using the oil could input thier view as a few people have said to me that it could be bad for the engine if i could get some postive reviews on people using this oil then it could save me 60-70 pound on another oil change?
