Hi

I would replace the oil in the Diff while your at it. 1.1 litres of oil is all it needs.

230K

And power steering fluid if the car has done 100k or more.

Yes. MB Inchcape is where I order most of my bits from. based in Oxford. 3 days is normal. When you are ordering, add the comment : Parts needed by ......day, and they ussually arrive before then.

The guy on the phone there, is very helpful. One of the best that I have ever spoken to when ordering parts and co-incidently, seems to be always the same guy.

Parcel force, so if nobody is at home, they leave a card. You can call them to arrange a delivery day, or collect from their depot. (incidently, 150 miles for me, so they leave at post office, I cannot lose !)

Should I get the Mercedes Brake Fluid, Power Steering Fluid and coolant?

Should I get the Mercedes Brake Fluid, Power Steering Fluid and coolant?

Coolant every 4 years. MB stuff is good but comma make some excellent coolant too.

MB brake fluid is dot 4 plus and is worth using but not essential. (£8.07p+vat/litre)

You will only need ps fluid if it needs topping up.

I now have some prices and they are making me start to question the use of OEM parts. I had a name and a part number and entered them in the website which produced the second Name and Part Number. This has left me a bit confused. Any help with the following questions much appreciated.

Do I need a covering for the charcoal filter?
How many Litres of ATF do I need?
How many litres of Brake Fluid?
How many litres of PAS Fluid?
How many litres of coolant?
2 different parts came up for the Front and Rear Discs which do I need?

I was waiting for you to get a shock when you found out the prices ! ATF capacities can be seen on "Television's" posting on this forum.

The most expensive parts you will need, after the brake discs and maybe the spark plugs are the fluids, especially ATF and engine oil. Engine oil, I switched to Chevron Fully synthetic as it's half the price of Mobil 1. £23 for 8 ltrs at Costco. It says meets MB spec on the container. Also plan to change this every 5K miles, rather than 10K, this is my personal choice. Engine oil filter, £8. Diff oil, £10.

ATF, I stuck with original MB. I purchased 8 ltrs, although only used 7.2 ltrs. Total about £70. Sump gasket, about £7. ATF Filter £8.

Brake fluid, used DOT 4 Syn, Morrison's forecourt. 1 ltr = £2.38. (I may get a hammering for this from other forum members ??)

Pads, your choice, depends what your looking for. Again, I stuck with MB. Not that much difference in price. You can buy cheaper / more expensive (Green or Red pads, EBZ, I wish I had bought, although more cost.) Brake discs, did not need them, but likely next time. air filters, next time.

I also purchased a few spares, which I needed, sump washers, bleed screws, £8 for 4, ATF filler plug £1, sump bolts £3, caliper bolts, brakepad fitting pins, etc etc.

The first time I read your list on this post, it was unreadable, too small. I see you have edited it to look larger. I won't comment on the P/Ns and prices. Others may do. Looks about right. But only buy what you need.

Thanks for the info.

I decided to go with OEM parts, the total price was £618.69 + Oil + Labour. This included an ATF dip stick at £30.96 :(

Jobs done at the weekend:
Air filter
Oil filter
Fuel filter
Carbon filter
Pollen filter
Oil
Front discs
Front pads
Brake fluid
Front wiper blade
Rear wiper blade
Front N/S foglight lense
Kurust front cross member and other parts (not too badly rusted)

Jobs still to do:
Thermostat
Coolant
ATF fluid
ATF filter
Rear discs
Rear pads
4 wheel alignment
POR 15 front cross member and other parts
Clean duo value
Clean MAS

Jobs crossed off the list:
PAS fluid change as the mechanics all said they had never had to change it before.

I had the diff oil changed earlier in the year when the seals were done.

Is there any difference between Dot 4 and Dot 4 Plus brake fluid? I went with the OEM one as it was Dot 4 Plus and the garage only had Dot 4.

Cheers, Peter.

Whats that?

I forgot also.

I will give you a clue.

You carry it in your pocket.

Replace key fob battery?

Glad you got it all done ok. One thing, I would question them on the dipstick price. where did you buy it ? I bought one from MB last month. It was £23 including vat. (I am looking at the receipt now).

I bought it all from www.mercedes-benz-parts.co.uk and have to phone them tomorrow as they did not send the fuel filter, luckily I had one spare as I had been thinking about trying biodiesel. I will ask them about the price of the dip stick too.

I have to send back 2 packs of hydralic PAS fluid as I did not need it along with the rubber gearbox gasket as apparently you do not need to replace it every time.

I would not send back the sump gasket till after you have the job done. You may need it. Mine was brittle at the front end. (maybe Blackc55 or other, will advise better on this)
