I'm thinking of buying an ML 270 D auto, around 2003 :D

Is there is anything major that I should look out for when testing one?
I'll be checking the gearbox, temperature and all the bells and lights. Are they prone to diff problems or major weak rust spots:dk:

Cheers guys

Don't know about chassis but engine checks are like any other MB CDI; tranny oil bleed(!) changes should have been made every 40-60k, check that intake manifold flaps are moving (you can see the lever moving under the manifold), no 'turbo sounds', no black or moist around the injectors, no diesel moisture around the pumps and hoses. Aux belt runs smoothly. No humping idle at cold start, starts immediately and glow plug light works like it should. ALL warning lights working before ignition.

Give a good flooring to pedal, after few pulls should not give much smoke.

Body wise they are very prone to rust, just about anywhere!

I've got a 2003 ML270 CDI. I've had to replace front discs and pads, MAF sensor and I've just had all five injectors reseated. I was speaking to the mechanic at Three Points in Bristol and he said they were generally pretty reliable. Nothing particularly stands out as a problem except wear and tear on an older vehicle. Rust wise they seem to suffer on the arches and other spots same as any other merc of this vintage. He said maintenance and not too many owners was the key to a good car.
Good luck on your purchase.
