I went for a set of Firestones on mine and once the first 500 miles had been driven (very poor grip for this period) they are much quieter than Conti's and better grip.

Are you sure the grip was better than the Contis or that you had gotten used to it and a slight improvement gave you a subjective view?

A very fair point but the tyres seem to have a stiffer side wall which give a better feel in corners. That said I dont think I ever pushed the Conti's to the max

My missus E320cdi had Michelin Pilot Premacy's (225 55 16) on it when we got it. I have had no complaints with them, never lost grip or had any drama, and they seem pretty quiet too.

I replaced them with the same just recently. They weren't cheap and cost £500 all in for the four of them but as it is the missus driving the baby, I didn't want to take any chances.

At least they weren't as expensive as the rear tyres she had on her Crossfire before that. They were £250 per corner!

I would say shop around once you have decided on a tyre as I phoned several places and saved myself over £150 from the most expensive supplier.

Happy hunting.

so its a 3 horse race - Goodyear Eagle F1, Michelin Primacy or stick with Continentals..

I am getting around 15,000 to a set or rears will i get better from either the Goodyears or the Michelins?

I like the grip of the Continentals but feel I ought to try something different....

If we get snow (I know they are all summer tyres) wonder which would be the best?

Michelin's get my vote,
I want a good alround tyre that other folks use and recommend.

Going round blind corners with the pedal to the metal is not something we will be doing anytime soon, nor will we be testing the high speed limits of our car.

Regards
John

Michelin Pilot Sport 2s. I've just put two new MO ones on the back of my CLK and they came in at £137.00 each from Top Gear tyres in Reading.

These Michelins grip like angry badgers and last for ages.

I got Michelins on my car now. Great tyres.
I will try the Good years next time round as I have heard alot of good reviews about them.

They are also cheaper

What type of Michelins? Primacy or Pilot Sports? What sort of wear mileage you getting?

Thanks

I currently have 4 sets of Mercedes wheels for 2 cars. Summer and winter wheels for each, but my wife says I have a wheel fettish!

255/40/19 Dunlop SP01
255/45/18 Michelin Pilot Primacy
245/40/18 Goodyear F1
225/55/16 Dunlop SP9000

The Goodyears replaced Conti SportContat 2 and do everything those tyres did but make far less noise and have better wet grip.
They are as quiet and comfortable as the 16" SP9000's (just gone back on for winter) but with much better stability and dry grip.
Can't complain about the Michelins, but they are matched by the SP01's in every area even though the Dunlops are on larger dia. rims.
What is important to you?
I just would not have any more Continetals due to the noise on the E Class and the poor wear rate on my wife's C180K.

i have had all the brands on my car minus the bridgestones, but by far the best are the goodyear eagle F1s, i have researched high and low and the best tyre on the market is the F1s so i have them on all for corners on all of my cars.

I had the continental sport contact 2 original with car..it was noisy although did me 28000 miles..upgraded the sportspack 17" 225 front and 255 rear for new AMG 18"alloys 225 front and 255 rear..this time, i went for the Michelin Pilot Sport 2...this are much quieter..and the grap is awesome..You can feel the complete difference in quality and comfort..

Michelins are very good..

Just a question my 18'' AMG's have 245/40's on the front and 265/ 35's on the rear, can I fit narrower tyres to the rims and still keep everything safe?

Cheers

:)

Yikes..That is very wide..Dont you have issues with clearance and turning issues with 245 fronts and 265 rears..
All depends on your load as well..everything looks good standing from outside watching it..once you sit in it and with passengers, it is another story on bumps and turnings..I maintained my 225 fronts but managed to increase rear to 255..although 19" would have worked but with load on the car, would have caused some clearance on occasions..

Make sure the tyres can handle the load if going narrower..good luck!!

Goodyears

As the Goodyear's seem one of the popular choices I thought that I'd look up some prices for my W203 (225/45/17 & 245/40/17).
There are plenty of places selling the GSD3 tyre but the Asymmetric is harder to find. Anyone know anywhere that these can be obtained fitted for a sensible (i.e. cheap as possible) price?
Are the Asymmetrics an update to the GSD3 or just sold in parallel? The tyre test reports seem better for the Asym's hence why I thought I'd given them a try. Click on the link them the tyretest.com link

Goodyears - China?

Parked up next to a W203 today, and noticed he had Goodyear tyres. They were clearly marked 'Made in China' on the sidewall.

Now Chinese quality is improving fast, but the consistency of that quality is still an issue. Just ask Mattel shareholders....

Has anyone else got main brand Chinese tyres?

International tyres

My F1 Goodyears have 'Made in China' on the sides and they are fine!:D
My tyres were supplield by Dunlop Motorsport in Birmingham, who hadn't got any Dunlops of the right size in stock, so got some shipped over from thier German HQ which turned out to be Goodyears (with whom they share technical resources) and made in the far east!
May drive them to France next year to make then truly international!;)

I've been running with Dunlop SP Winter Sports (winter tyres) on the the rears for the last 6 weeks - 2K miles most of which have been motorway, wet and wild, between Preston and the Mull.

Deep cut chunky tread, great grip, no oversteer, no road noize whatsoever. And they look good. Wish I had them on the fronts also.

Best tyres I have ever ran with. I can find no fault with them, and that's unusual for me !

I've got Goodyear F1s on the front, they wear out too quickly on the outer edges for me. I will not buy these again.

That's a sign of underinflated tyres.............. but I am sure you checked that already...

Merry Christmas
