I was thinking of perhaps Castrol GTX Magnatec 10W-40

Could anybody recommend this for the Merc engine, or is there something more appropriate?

thanks everyone!

I just topped mine up with that :)

EDIT: although mine isn't a C220, makes little difference.

hehe!

its a bargain down at Makro! £10.99 + VAT = £12.91
for 4.5L :) Thank you doo diddly doo!

Is that a semi-synthetic?

Good price BTW! :D

Cheers,

Will

Halfords doing 5L of Fully Synthetic for £15, half normal price!

it's Halford's own make. but it does say that it meets MB's requirements, among others.

hmmm what make is that halfords oil? is it castrol too?

Magnatec 10W-40W is what MB usually use and it's fully synthetic.

At the ridiculously low price Makro are charging for it, I wouldn't hesitate - clear their shelves!! I paid about £18 last year and thought that was cheap.(BTW, Magnatec comes in 4.5 litre cans, not 5 litres).

Now here's a big cat amongst some pigeons!

Robbo,

Having made me think a bit more on this, I couldn't get anything from the Castrol site at all. On the box it says "Synthetic Engineering" .

Now, take a look here: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/?f=4&t=27956

Oh dear, I wonder if MB are aware of this, especially as they recommend semi or fully synthetic oil in all the manuals I've ever read!

Back to Halford's I guess! (At least theirs is synthetic).

Anyone want to buy 9 litres GTX Magnatec mineral oil?

I think I may have just opened a hornet's nest!

Regards,

Alex

I am glad I ignored my MB dealers advice to use magnatec and insisted on using fully synthetic mobil 1 when I had mine serviced!

As my car's service booklet has been MB stamped since new, and furthermore Castrol Magatec has been used (and written in same) on each occasion, I wonder where I would stand if the big-ends seize up tomorrow, and I take up the issue with Castrol, on the basis that they have been deceiving the public (and no doubt a number of manufacturers, well at least MB I assume) for the past 10 years!

I wish I hadna said that now - I think I'll use the missus's car tomorrow!

Alex
