Which Engine Oil?

Since your car has no DPF, I would avoid low-ash oils (229.51/229.52), even if they are approved for your engine. So I would stick to 229.5.

5W-30 is fine for high-mileage engines (though 99k isn't that high).

I run an old 186K derv on 5W30 .

I hear it a million times avoid low ash , low ash does have reduced ZDDP anti wear metal and non metal because the zinc and particularly the phosphorus are left as ash .

To offset this the oil basestock groups are juiced up with actual lab produced synthetics group 4 PAO and top group 5 Ester , sometimes then out performing the group 3 + additive package .

Not surprising really !

Also with a proper diesel manufacturer spec oil you get more detergents and dispersants in the additive package to cope with the extra soot of diesel .
That's more lovely little polar heads with hydrocarbon tails !

229.52 is a more fuel efficient version of 229.51 without antiwear loss performance and supermarket cheap and available .

Correct. And that is what most MB indies will put in your petrol engined car unless asked otherwise.
Petronas and Shell still sell 5w/30 229.5 oil but not in bulk containers like the MB oil, nor at the inexpensive price.

Mine is a diesel, it is interesting that in the service history (all at MB dealership) they've used 5w30 of some sort, except once (5w40).

Ima scour the web and see if I can find 229.5 in 5w30 form. I'd rather stick to 5w30.

Sorry to add to this, is there a difference in 229.5 and 229.51?

I have a 60 plate CLC 200 CDi Auto Sport and having searched old paperwork both have been used by previous owners

If your diesel car is equipped with DPF, then you should not be using 229.5 oil, because it is not low-ash oil and can clog the DPF.

You should only be using either 229.31, 229.51, or 229.52 oils. The latter is preferable (but not mandatory) because it is the latest/newest spec.

These 3 links should help. Each will open a new Tab/Window so you can switch between them if need be.

Determine engine type (First three digits of engine number which can be found on V5). to establish which approved spec number to use. Also refer to the 'Notes' at the bottom.

Tesco larger branches usually have great deals on Castrol oils , and they usually have the MB specific oils in stock .

Agree, it's just a license for the car companies to make money.

Car companies rarely sell engine oil... Mercedes Benz do, as do GM (Vauxhaull), but it's not very common.

And, at any rate, franchised dealers are not obliged to use the car manufacturer's branded oil - and most don't.

So not sure that it would be fair to describe it as car makers getting a license to make money from selling own-brand oil....

20l of MB Specification 229.51 is reasonable value in my book for <£70 inc.

Checked the equivalent Castrol Edge 5-30w - the cheapest I could find 20l at a trade site was still £138 inc.

Always bought 20l multiples and find it excellent value at Mercedes.

Why have all the 20 litre cans disappeared from the mb dealers?
i went to buy another one and can’t find any

If you mean that you can't find 20-litre 'cans' it's because they seem to have changed to 'wine box' type 20-litre containers; the last two I've had have been the box type. I prefer the old-style 20-litre plastic container but that's progress for you

Seems to be the "way" of thing's now...I just received 20 L of ATF in a cardboard encased plastic container, with a foldaway tap. Seems to work fine, although I would prefer the heavy plastic containermyself.
