Which Engine Oil?

Which engine oil do I use for a service for a 1992 Mercedes W124 300e Petrol Automatic

The original MB spec would have been 229.1 which has long been superseded first by 229.3 then 229.5 and more recently by 229.6 and 229.7.

Any of those specs will be backwards compatible but there is no chance you will find any oil to 229.1 and no good reason to use it if you did as later specs are better. You can still find 229.3 and 229.5 as MB still provide a list of approved oils.

If not insisting on an MB approved oil, then the bottom line should be that any oil you use meets Acea A3/B4. If you do that you can't go far wrong.

Each owner will have their own idea, that the oil they use is the best . Engine in my car was bought up on Castrol .This was what i was told after i spoke to Castrol customer service ,, they told me to use --Castrol Magnatec Semi Synthetic .10W40 my engine is a M103. And i used this type of oil every 6 months to service my engine and have done this for the last 10 years that i have been the owner .

Grober ..I cant find any proof or the email i had about this right now .And as you bought this up i have done search [ like you ] to find there as been no change at Opie Oil but i know i have had an email from an oil company about a change . There is another oil distributor that i purchased oil from in the past, it could have been from them .Good that you pulled me up on this one .

Hi , the engine in my car is an 2015 C207 E400 3.5 M276 engine. The car has averaged 6000 miles per year from new.The car has been serviced 12 times since new.

The Mercedes dealers I have used seem to prefer to use Shell engine oil.

Since the pandemic I don't use the car much and have now average 2000 miles per year.

I now don't have the oil change service at 6 month interval with such a low annual mileage.

When I did have the car serviced between the official Mercedes services the garage used a Castrol engine oil.

I only use an engine oil that is approved by Mercedes and never use an engine oil that complies to the Mercedes spec.

As long as the MB oil specs are met, manufacturer is irrelevant. The dealership is bound to use the correct spec by default.

Personally for every car, I've just switched to motul 0W40 X-Max, I wouldn't recommended it. These days I don't have the time to check oil analysis from a lab, nor do I care to pay the excess fees at the dealership after the warranty expires. I've just started to go with all around motul solutions for autopart lubrication, from engine until differential.

Me neither given its continued involvement in Russia.

''Other European marketers, including Motul and TotalEnergies, continue to supply finished lubes into Russia.''

Hello all,

I'm looking at changing the oil in my 2000 Mercedes CLK 320 Elegance V6 Petrol. I was going to buy this:

But Mobil 1's site is recommending this:

Obviously, Mobil 1 is probably correct but I've never had to put 0w-40 in any other cars I've owned, it's almost always been 5W-30 so just wanted to get your opinions and definitely don't want to damage the engine.

Thanks!

In what way we're thinking about damage to the engine ?

Neither oil will damage your engine. If the car lives outside rather than in a garage, then the 0W oil has a small advantage.

What shocked me is the price. You should be able to find an MB approved oil for less than that. Just do a search for your spec which I expect is 229.3 or 229.5 and surprising as it may seem try Halfords.

229.52 spec oils low saps c3 on eBay, 20 litres for less than £50.

Use code have8 at checkout.

Yeah, not cheap! Thanks for your help! I have found one cheaper now. :)

I an earlier post I wrote, I asked about Shell Helix Ultra and was told that it was one of the best oil's on the market. My 2013 SL 350 which I've owned for about 2 1/2 years with 42k on the clock has always had MB 229.5 oil used when serviced. In my ownership I've bought it from MB in Edinburgh, as they seem to be the cheapest and free delivery. However I don't use the car all that much and it lives in my garage out of the elements. but on start up after say 3/4 weeks I used to get a very slight and I mean slight rattle for about a second or so, the same when starting after about 1/2 hour after a run. I did a lot of research on this and was swayed into thinking I needed new secondary timing chain tensioners and the fitment of oil check valves which I would of undertaken myself. However since using the above mentioned oil the engine is silent both on cold start and hot start. As a time served mechanic (now retired) I'm slightly puzzled as to why this should be so, but there it is. So I shall continue using said oil and go down the road of ignorance is bliss. :dk:

I would be very interested to hear other members thoughts on this strange but true matter.
