Which Engine Oil?

I an earlier post I wrote, I asked about Shell Helix Ultra and was told that it was one of the best oil's on the market. My 2013 SL 350 which I've owned for about 2 1/2 years with 42k on the clock has always had MB 229.5 oil used when serviced. In my ownership I've bought it from MB in Edinburgh, as they seem to be the cheapest and free delivery. However I don't use the car all that much and it lives in my garage out of the elements. but on start up after say 3/4 weeks I used to get a very slight and I mean slight rattle for about a second or so, the same when starting after about 1/2 hour after a run. I did a lot of research on this and was swayed into thinking I needed new secondary timing chain tensioners and the fitment of oil check valves which I would of undertaken myself. However since using the above mentioned oil the engine is silent both on cold start and hot start. As a time served mechanic (now retired) I'm slightly puzzled as to why this should be so, but there it is. So I shall continue using said oil and go down the road of ignorance is bliss. :dk:

I would be very interested to hear other members thoughts on this strange but true matter.
Tackifiers make this possible.

Interesting. I did see something regarding this in an earlier post. Could you please elaborate. :thumb:
There's a load of info here >> lubricant tackifier - Google Search
I've not read any of it but have been aware of tackifiers after seeing them enable this >>

The oil in that demo, when an egg whisk is placed in enough for only the bottom of the whisk to be in the oil (1/4'') will climb the beaters all the way to the top when the whisk is cranked.

Tackifiers are temperature sensitive. They activate when/as the oil cools and coat the components on shut-down so they are primed for next start-up. As the machine heats up, the effect of the tackifier reduces until shut-down when the process repeats.

Well really oil muck structures when you don't change your oil frequently enough. Oil capabilities in more than one way. It clearly gives oil and security against the frictional harm of two metal surfaces scouring against one another. Oil additionally contains added substances like cleansers, hostile to oxidents, Dispersants and against frothing specialists, every one of which carries out a fundamental role to safeguard your motor.

I have always changed my oil ( in every car I've owned ) after 3/4k Your post alludes to oil that has not been changed for many thousands of miles which is not what the thread is about. We are talking about new oil and their viscosities.

I think he was just promoting his recovery business.

Hi,

Which engine oil should be used for M275 engine? 6.0L V12 Biturbo. From what I can see, it says you can either use 0W40 or 5W40

Put your reg into Opie oils , it'll tell you.

Thank you
I just checked and they don't list Mobil 1 but all the other brands of oil that they list say 5W40.
When I spoke with Euro Car Parts, they said it's ESP 0W40.

If someone from Europarts told me the time, I would look at my watch. If they said it was raining I would go outside to check.

I don't know about not trusting Eurocarparts, I wouldn't trust anybody on an engine like this except Mercedes.

Below is a link to the MB sheet that will tell you what spec oil to use in an M275. It's 229.5 which is indeed available as a 5W40 or 0W40.

It really doesn't matter much which you choose although if it was me I'd use the 0W40 if the car sleeps outdoors or 5W40 if it sleeps in a garage.

Lots of oils meet the MB229.5 spec, just make sure it's on the MB list of approved oils. See 2nd link.

The glovebox manual will list the oil spec in the back

I bet you are thinking I’ll change it 3 times with a new filter at 10-50-100 miles ;)

That about sums up my 3 years ownership. 😉
