Which non-iPad tablet PC?

^ true I had my Iphone 4 for a year and sold it, £30 more to swap to the iPhone 4s...

:)

The initail outlay may be more but look at the value.

Most of the Apps when they do cost, are low cost circa £1 - £2. Don't go mad.

I have a couple of specialist ones that cost circa £20. They are very specialist though!

Lots are free.

I too was anti apple - until I bought an iMac. Ok I know there are Windows desktops cheaper but ----- it just works and doesn't crash or freeze.

I then bought Mrs C an iPad - she is now on it all the time - she LOVES it.

I also have an iPod Touch.

All three are connected via iCloud so diaries etc are all inter connected.

It just works....

Not saying its the best - but I like them..:thumb:

Go with what's better value for money, what's more reliable, what you can do more with, what has better support, what can work with a wider range of cheaper software.

That would be Linux then  :bannana:

But based on your apparent inability to use Mac, I guess that is out of question, right?

To the OP - as [almost] everyone here quite rightly pointed out, try iPad - it will not feel like a 'new' operating system, it'll be just logically and intuitively sequenced interface, easy to use and reliable device, which you will not care one little bit what OS it's running, - it really just works. :thumb:

I ported my cheap hp touchpad with cyanogenmods android. Still in development but it works great. I love the ease of use of my android phone. I know in the background its unix or its derivitive doing the business. But in a way thats easy to use. But my touchpad is just as good and with a bigger better size screen.

What makes you think I can't use a Mac? The fact I used it? And didn't like it? So people who don't like Mac just don't know how to use it?

There was a really interesting documentary on this a few weeks ago.

For whatever reason, Apple have managed to create a culture where it's fans firstly can't understand why anybody would want to use anything else but actually get quite hostile towards those that "question" this thought process.

You don't use a Mac therefore you must be stupid.

To be fair, Apple h produce some awesome devices (the iPad is just one of many) but a lot of us have been brought up to want to tinker and make it our own which of course is the opposite of what Apple want you to do. They want YOU to do things THEIR way.

Of course on this forum, if you turned round to a lot of the users and told them that they must be mad to want to change anything about their cars because MB know best and that they should always go straight to the dealer for everything etc etc they would (rightfully) call you out.

And is Android better

Not yet but it's getting there

Can digi cameras be uploaded to iPad using a USB port or what? Need something with wifi for going on hodilay but it must be able to back up the camera.

you can buy an adaptor to plug in thAT will read the sdcard

Absolutely agree, Apple have too strong a grasp on what you can and can't do (no Adobe Flash, can't install OSX on non-Apple computer etc.)

Acer Iconia Tab A100

Archos 80 G9

Asus Eee Pad Transformer

Medion Lifetab P9514

Toshiba AT100 - Thrive

All have USB. Either plug a camera into it with USB or use a USB->memory card adapter (now they're often the size of a USB memory stick). No need for an adapter to use USB, unlike with the iFad where the connection kit doesn't even work when you install the latest iOS update! ^ I already mentioned that in my earlier posts.

But Druk asked about the iPad so I answered with a solution....for the iPad

I appreciate you don't like apple. Thats great thanks.

I was just saying the connector no longer works in case Druk considered getting one, and showing viable alternatives.

I am in the market for a tablet but am undecided on which one to go for. I have and ipod which I think does the job but nothing super special a Window 7.5 HTC mobile phone which I like a lot and use a windows PC as work supply it. I like the look of the HTC flyer.

It is fairly obvious you don't like the Ipad which is fine but posting links to a couple of reviews on the apple store website and implying these are true facts is misleading. The problem with reviews from disgruntled people is that there is no context. One of the disgruntled people is trying to get the camera kit working on his iphone whereas the kit clearly says for the Ipad.:wallbash:
The other two reviewers who cannot get the kit to work- i have no idea what they are doing as it works first time on both my Ipad and Ipad2 which are both upgraded to Ios 5.0.01.
Some other reviews comment about san disc cards being a problem - no problem with my san disc cards. I suspect the problem these users are having is due to the camera firmware writing JPG or RAW files using formats that are no recognised by the Ipad photo import software. This is not unusual and is a camera manufacturer issue.

Strictly speaking Android isn't unix.

It's JAVA (of course the JAVA runs on a *nix variant)

Android consists of a operating system kernel based on the Linux kernel. Quite a lot of Android is written in C not Java. Java is actually used predominantly for Android apps not the operating kernel.

From Wiki for your information

While most Android applications are written in Java, there is no Java Virtual Machine in the platform and Java byte code is not executed. Java classes are compiled into Dalvik executables and run on Dalvik, a specialized virtual machine designed specifically for Android and optimized for battery-powered mobile devices with limited memory and CPU. J2ME support can be provided via third-party applications.

I don't think your description is any better.

It is not solely Java based.

Android is a platform that consists of the Linux kernel, various runtime library and services, and closely coupled Java runtime. On top of this is is intended to run further Java based services and apps. It is still possible to develop non-Java native software.

Edit: I hadn't noticed scillyisles has provided a response

A lot of IT geeks (who seem to know what they're talking about) seem to like Macs - and OSX in particular.

Apparently the underlying OS is quite advanced - its not all about the interface.
