Which non-iPad tablet PC?

I used to buy anything but Apple. Creative mp3 players rather than ipods, Nokia N series rather than iphone etc. Still stick with windows based pcs and laptops but after reluctantly trying an iphone and seeing just how simple it was to use compared with what I had previously bought I will now happily use Apple. I like the format and I like the simplicity of Itunes - especially now you are not tied to a pc and can upgrade o/s and (with one iunes account for all devices) can share apps with all devices on on one account via wifi.

As for tablets - I wanted one for the same reasons you mention. Went for the Ipad 2 from the USA (so saved over £100) and it's been excellent and is being used as much if not more now than when it was new early this year. Brilliant piece of kit for surfing/emails/apps/books(reading) and facetime/imessaging.

If ease of use is a factor, Linux can install on a PC and has so much free software of a higher standard than Apple's expensive software. I used Linux Mint on my IBM T60 for a while, I only switched because I have lots of Adobe software and no time to try to get them to work under Linux. And I'm not using Linux on my HP TC4400 because I love Windows 8 Preview's touch and handwriting tools (and Onenote).

All I'm saying is - justthink about the future. Apple's software is hardly evolving (SIRI one of only a handful of innovations) and Linux and Android have so many developers that it should be evolving at an increasing rate over the next couple of years.

Seriously? You would buy something based on looks?

My W140 is arguably one of the ugliest Mercs made.

But the original poster asked for a tablet PC to do tablet stuff (web surf, etc). Its not a workhorse like your W124, its the computing equivalent of a weekend car, its a shiny vanity item.

And yes we have moved on from buying stuff based on practicality alone. Otherwise we would all be wearing dungarees because they are all so hardwearing and well made. :thumb:

This is coming from someone that is not fanboy buy any means (i have developed for Android and iOS and my workstation is a Win 7 machine). I like the Android OS but I prefer the iPad, it was an opinion.

I don't carry on and on, I just happened to remember seeing those videos. I was going to have left it at my last post, but thought those videos have some value (somehow?)

Will im sorry to say that I also had to convert to apple when it came to the Ipad.

I had no intention of buying one but won one and had it up on ebay for sale... Anyway I tried it for 5 minutes and was hooked.
The issue with other tablets is the whole App thing. There are so many things designed specifically for the Ipad.
For example when I was following the Jacko trial, Sky News' Ipad app was fantastic, it was tailor made just for the Ipad and has a lot more, better and organised coverage of the trial than even their own website or TV channel.

Same with many of the newspapers I follow.

Ive stuck with my blackberry for now but I think one day ill have to succumb to the forces of apple.

Thanks Jay.

Apple app question. Are there enough free ones for most people's use, or do you you inevitably end up spending money each week on the latest must have app?

Are Android tablets any different in this respect?

Any views on the Asus Transformer?

Seems to offer greater flexibility. The wife's laptop is 4 years old now, so it's not too wasteful to replace.

I thought I would like this one when it came out but I have to say that I just dont think the Android OS works well on tablets (great on phones). I strongly think that you would be disappointed with this particular purchase.

Ive never bought an App!
It all depends what you want it for... for me its casual surfing and catching up on news.

Some of the newspapers charge but I only read the free ones.

Hello

I have also never bought an App. No need there are so many free ones that do what you want to do.

You really are best to try them its ok us saying this and that, but from the ones we have had on test the screens can be completely different. So far the Acer Iconia Tab is doing very well.

Also you can get cases for most that flip round with bluetooth keyboards, so you have in away a laptop also..

Apple app question. do you you inevitably end up spending money each week on the latest must have app?

No.
There are apps like the one I use - 'Free Apps' (which is free! ;)). They list apps which are free for a limited time or reduced and have clickable links so you can download them directly.
Most of my apps are free ones but I have succumbed to the odd game which has been reduced from a few quid to 69p. I bet I've spent less than a fiver on apps in the last year but have got whatever I've wanted/needed.

There is a reason why Apple has ~73% of the UK market for tablets with Samsung a distant second with 5.9% and that is because the Ipad is much better than the Samsung from many different perspectives.
Yes Apple marketing and design is good but to portray the Ipad as marketing over substance is somewhat blinkered.

I had an Asus Transformer but had to return it due to a screen fault. Nice bit of kit, but relatively heavy.

The new version is due out soon.

Skype does work fine a majority of the time to be honest.

We are due an os upgrade to 4.0 soon, so hopefully a lot of the bugs will have been ironed out.

I have 2 HP Touchpads, bro-in-law has Samsung Tab, which is quite good. I wouldn't touch the Asus.

I really depends on your budget, you can still pick up the odd Touchpad (hint hint)

iPad2 is nice, but the 3 in on its way - however, you are paying laptop+ prices for them. I wouldn't pay that much for a tablet.

IMHO iPad = iPhone without the phone so prices should reflect that. A trimmed down version of a mobile with a larger screen should not cost what it does

I would have said the same until I bought a tablet. It's just a different way to browse, that needs to be tried imo :-)

Whilst not a consideration for most you should take resale into account, Apple products hold their value better than their competitors when it comes to upgrading and listing on eBay.
