Which non-iPad tablet PC?

A lot of IT geeks (who seem to know what they're talking about) seem to like Macs - and OSX in particular.

Apparently the underlying OS is quite advanced - its not all about the interface.

Precisely! I came to Mac from Linux - I guess after a certain age one just wants things to work and not necessarily having to recompile the entire system every month  ... but for the last couple of years before the switch, my Linux desktop looked pretty much like Mac, and today, just like a few years ago I can fire up CLI and sudo my way to almost anything I need to tweak in my OS X ... Of course, we shouldn't tell that to those who'd like to believe that Apple is the evil boogyman who hypnotises unsuspecting dumb users into submission

Out of the box a Mac is more useful than Windows for lots of stuff.

It's not that the underlying OS is that advanced. It's quite old fashioned. And it comes with old fashioned command line utilities which most Mac users never need to bother about.

I guess it's advanced compared to the competition even if it's based on old unix tech.

OSx has come a long way from its Mach roots.

Quite clever of apple to have virtually the same thing on their other devices (phone, iPad etc) too!

Not really - the original Unix systems I worked on supported multiple users and had less main memory and storage than modern portable devices.

The reason it's not so obvious in the Windows world is the level of bloat and detritus that Windows NT carried right from day one. Some of that detritus is what gives Windows its tremendous backwards compatibility for legacy apps. Some of it is just design baggage.

Thanks Dryce - another good point!

Just out of interest - how much memory did you actually have on these old Unix machines?

Update: I've taken the plunge with a Samsung Galaxy Tab :) (thanks Whitey)

Time will tell whether I regret not buying an iPad.

I'm sure you won't regret it in the slightest

Dateline : August 2011

Bought wife iPad2 for her birthday.

Dateline : December 2011

Had peace and quiet for 4 months and not one complaint from Mrs. LTD about the iPad. She is delighted with it as it does everything she needs to without the burden of a laptop. Loaded up with books and all sorts of apps that she uses. Email, web etc. is all catered for.

For us, job's a good 'un.

Skyfire or Photon allow this to happen on an iPad.

Sorry to burst your USP

Adobe are also dropping flash I thought ?

Hope you happy with the Samsung

If / when our household buy a tablet it will be apple :)

Wife and I used the Samsung quite a bit yesterday. Both very happy. Little need to read the manual as most things are intuitive. Even Skype worked well with video, when some reports were of it being a bit flaky.

MBClub mobile app works well too :)

Why would you want to use a mobile app on a tablet - find the full safari web page runs fine on an iPad..

Good question. I'm not really sure how best to use this new toy. I'm trying out a few apps (iPlayer, YouTube etc) and seeing if they're easier to use than just going to their webpage.

Rather than start a new thread I'll barge in here ;)

Does the imminent arrival of Android 4 mean a load of new, more powerful tablets, or is it just an update for the existing herd?
