To a certain extent the choice of who you buy from is dictated by the age of the car.

Certainly, main dealers must have an age limit on the vehicles they will sell (7 or 8 years old?).

I'm not surprised that Mercedes Direct are bottom of the pile if my experiences with them are typical.

MB of Bath. First time I've purchased from main dealer. Previous cars (944, 968, Boxster) were from Porker Specialists.

I have only ever bought 2 cars from main dealers, 1 Landrover and 1 Mercedes, both turned out to be unpleasant experiences. All the others have been through independents or private or friends/relatives.

What's so bad about Mercedes Direct? I found mine on eBay (but completed the transaction as a standard private sale). The chap whom I bought it from had obtained it from Mercedes Direct 10 months/3k miles previous. He gave me his invoice - I paid him 5k less than he had bought it for...but he had spent a princely sum on fitting AMG bumpers, 18" wheels and other bits.

I have never yet bought a car from a main dealer, or even dealers of any sort - I prefer buying privately. I prefer the saving you can make - no salesman's commission/lighting bill/coffee machine rental on top of my invoice, against the supposed "peace of mind". That said, when you go private you can still end up dealing with people in the motor trade. So I have previously bought a car off a guy who owned his own (non-sales) garage, as well as a guy who sold cars from home having acquired them from dealer-only auctions (the particular car had been wrongly listed in the auction book and no one else had cared to check out the posher badge!) .

i bought my mb from porche dealer, was a trade in for a boxter, at bottom book, but you buy cash and cannot go back if its a lemon.

bought mine through a broker I found online, saved £4000 off list price yet car still came direct from a main dealer. I asked my my local dealer (Thurrock Lakeside) if they could match the deal but there computer said no.

Good 'ole Ebay ....... ;)

Me too, and the bargain of a lifetime. Mint condition and it still has to depreciate a long way to get down to the price I paid for it

I tend to try and do that when buying. Go in with the cash and accept the risk.
