I got a tiny chip on my windscreen (the A area), less than a 5p coin in size.

The guy in a local garage quoted me 40 quid to get it repaired.

Does that sound good or he's ripping me off?

Check your insurance policy, under glass repair - you should find how to get it done for free.

I won't be able to do it for free, because glass repair service is not included with my policy.

I can remember having the chips repaired in my 210 windscreen. The filling became a milky colour which I found irritating, so I ended up getting a new screen.

Yep I have never had a successful repair either, had 3 done and the mark it leaves after time is more distracting than the chip IMHO. I think it depends on the size of the chip currently got a 1p size one on the Volvo but think the screen will go once we get some cold weather,I'll then just get it replaced and pay the £50 excess.

Agreed. :thumb:

I have a 1p size chip in the Sprinter screen and I'll be replacing the screen shortly. IMHO, the time wasted organizing the repair and waiting for the works to be carried out just isn't worth it considering the poor end result.

Replacing a windscreen wasn't on my list really...It is possible that your repair wasn't carried out properly and that's why you got a poor result in the end?

Actually I bought a kit from Halfords (yes I know ) but actually it works quite well. I did a repair on a small bullseye 18 months ago and its been fine ever since, hardly any mark at all. That said I suspect its luck of the draw and dependant upon the nature of the crack. :)

... and how quickly you get it fixed after it's happened....

We had a free chip repair done on the Audi and it's been fine so far (6 months approx.).

Quite possibly a poor repair, but I wouldn't take that route again.

I had a few smaller chips in the screen that the repairer kindly filled too. The main problem was nighttime driving when the filled chips became a distraction which worsened when raining.

HTH.

Paul.

This is mostly down to poor repair techniques. I used glass doctors to repair a previous badly attempted repair by autoglass which was still clearly visible and distracting. After glass doctors did their magic it was near invisible.

I've heard of Glass Doctors before, and they do seem like a decent company.

Any experience with National Windscreens anyone? I think they're one of the biggies, aren't they?

Just checked my paperwork and it was National Windscreens that did the bad repair on my car not Autoglass. The problem is with either is it is just down to who you get doing the repair and how good they are.
