Following on from my other thread (and apologies for starting a new one, but thought it clearer)...

I found a car on eBay - the car is perfect.
I have spoken to the seller, he is willing to sell outside of eBay and I think i've negotiated a good price.
The seller has only owned the car for two months. he states he wants to sell, as he and his wife are having too much trouble getting kids in and out of the car.
The owner is not down at the registered owner.
The previous owner had a private plate on the car, and wanted the private plate back.
The previous owner sent off the log book, and then returned it to the current owner all signed off.
The current owner did not register themselves as they decided they would not keep it.

My worry is I am not buying the car off the owner.

But then again, if it all goes well then i would be getting a very good car.

Be careful, but the name in the V5 is the registered keeper not neccesarily the owner.

i would not buy, but i would not walk away either.

I would...........................................................

hop step jump and run away.

But, who knows,it may be a good deal, but i like straightforward deals without complicationd

With the original owners name and address on the V5 you could contact them to be assured of it's validity.

I'd also do a HPI check. Worth doing a visual check yourself for major accident damage.....bent/wrinkled structural panels.

Check that the vehicle VIN matches the V5. I think the VIN is stamped in 2 places. The base of the windscreen and somewhere else (sorry can't remember where.....drivers sill maybe)

Re: current owners reason for sale. I always take this with a large pinch of salt and assess each car on its own merits.

Same here, not interested in any hanky panky. Straight, simple deal or I'm not interested. Not worth the risk IMO.

I'm talking about buying a car BTW!

As above the registered keeper is not necessary the owner, just make sure you get a HPI as some people are taking finance out on there vehicle from company's like 'sellyourlogbook' then contacting DVLA for a duplicate V5 and selling there car with finance owed

some people manage not to register themselves as owner (this means that the seller does not insist), thereby making it possible that they can resell (if they do not like or want the car) later without an additional owner.

sort of like a trader

nothing to worry about, IMHO, if the car checks out, i.e:

1. he has all the keys,
2. it is not reported lost or stolen,
3. he can show he has insured the car for 2 months, and
4. if possible, confirmation from previous registered keeper that it was sold to the seller.

IMHO sounds too risky!

Sounds like a small time trader to me. Could be legit, could be risky. I'd only buy such a car if I satisfied a number of criteria before hand.

Post the link up and we can further advise.

I agree, also the seller may have a reciept from the previous owner which you may be able to verify. If he is cagey about you or him contacting the previous owner then suspect something is amiss.

What is his ebay feedback like? Have you had a look through it to see if you can see how much he paid for the car and when he bought it, if he got it himself through ebay? You would be surprised at how many sellers don't realise that the history is available for all to see!

This is effectively what traders do... they dont have to register in their name.. If he has the FULL log book i wouldnt worry too much... just do a HPI check first.

Its true, as long as he has the full log book it doesnt matter if he isnt the registered keeper (i used to do this when i bought and sold cars from auction).

Posting the ebay link would be more useful though

I thought they had changed the trader bit and the trader still had to tell dvla hes the new keeper but it doesnt show up on the logbook?

He made a deal with ebay and is now prepared to screw them... and they're big. really big and can go after people that screw them. So what do you think he is prepared to do to you. Might be legit, but the guy is showing little class and poor integrity.

Would you buy a used car from this man?

selling off ebay really is nothing unusual, especially for big items like cars

As everyone else has said he's most likely just doing a bit of trading, as long as he has got history for the car and the logbook and you've got a clear HPI report I wouldn't be too worried about buying it from him, just make sure you do the exchange from his house and try and get a landline number and see if it matches up on BT phonebook if you're really worried.

Personally I would not buy a car that has been passed aloing the line without having change of ownership recorded - if there is a real genuine reason then fine - get the contact details of the previous registered owner and talk to them about the car - find out who they sold it to and WHEN. It could be that it has been passed around the trade been through 3 car auctions and generally a dog - you only have this guys word that he bought it 2 months ago - and you are assuming that he bought it from the previous registered owner.
There are plenty of decent cars for sale by genuine individuals - no point going after these cars that have some strange story about them - 9 times out of 10 there is some murky problem waiting for the new buyer.

Where there is one there is always another, have patients my friend, the right car for you will come sooner or later!
