2001 E320 CDI Estate w210 tailgate problem

I have a 2001 E320 CDI Estate w210, the tailgate has soft auto close... Overnight the tailgate has suddenly become heavy to lift and does not stay up.... ......When tailgate struts have previously failed me they have done so gradually, is it the struts????????????? If struts,,, is one or both of them??????

U may need to grease the struts

Most likely to be one of the gas struts has died,best replaced as a pair though.
