New Mercedes SL due in 2019 with revolutionary new platform | Auto Express

Reading between the lines, I have a mixed opinion of this.

They seem to be mostly concerned about reducing manufacturing costs rather than improving quality.

On the plus side however is the mention of a 4 seater SL.

Yup....speed and flexibility seem to be the drivers. Not necessarily compatible with increased quality :(

SLs are ridiculously expensive to build - I worked in Bremen.

Unless more competitive there will not be another SL.

Agreed!

Not doing much for me. I personally love the R230 hence all the money on mine. Drove a new one and aside the engine it wasn't for me.

So brought a new SLK250 CDi instead for the wife. Now that's a phenomenally good car.

can you explain why?

is it the relatively low volume?

I would have guessed it's the low volume and that it has its own platform and the amount of aluminium. Combining development with the SLK makes sense as long as it doesn't devalue the SL.

The pictures make it look quite petite. I'd also be a little concerned that it maybe looks a little bit too like the F-type - if you remove the star from the nose there's nothing that really says it's a MB.

AM' are kinda small too methinks;)
