211 E55 vs 996 C2

I wonder if the 996 really would win on a track? Sure it will handle better but it's giving up a lot of power and the E55 is not a Trans-Am.
I think you both need to book a track day and take a video camera :D

Ill Post you a vid soon, im in the proccess of giving the the 55 a stage 1 upgrade, pulley/software/green filters.

When im done ill post a link between this and a 996 Turbo "dms'ed".

That should be fun.......

Surely though that defeats the object. The same mod done to the Porker Turbo and the results would be even more significant.

It depends on the track. However the West Circuit at Bedford Aerodrome where Evo test their cars puts the 996 Carrera ahead of an SL55 (the quickest supercharged 55 Merc on that circuit) by around 4 seconds - the GT3s are a further 3 seconds ahead.

Straight line speed doesn't interest me. Anyone can stamp on the throttle and fly down a motorway at twice the speed limit - it's not particularly rewarding as a driving experience (or clever for that matter).

Each to their own - and no denying anybody else makes big engined cars with quite so much grunt as AMG!

If you go to the dealership today and buy both cars, the 911turbo is faster. period.
It does not run out of go at 155mph.
so even in a straight line it is still faster,
Now if you start modifying, that is a different case. dont forget tuning arms like ruf and rinspeed porsches and a ruf 996 will hit 60 in 3.7secs

Yes, but you have to compare apples with apples. A basic 996 and an E55 were about the same money new. A 911 turbo or GT3 is a lot more.

I wouldn't say no to either.

apples with apples agreed.
A basic 996 and a basic w211 then:D , not a supercharged one.
and even then a basic 996 will still go past 155mph.
the 996 only needs to stay in view up till 155 and then fly past the merc when the limiter kicks in.
When you start mods anything can happen.
I have just watched a smart car toast a F430 in a quarter-mile on autotrader videos

There is one important factor that most people seem to be missing.
The Porsche is a sports car through and through and the Mercs are not.
Sure round a track the Porsche may lose on acceleration but will catch up on the twisty bits and is a much more rewarding/competant car to drive round a track.
The Merc will quite happily cruise at ridiculously high speeds and in the real world of road driving is the most comfortable and usable, the Porsche is not made to be like that, the Merc will sit 4-5 adults in comfort, the Porsche will not, the Porsche will run round and round a track devouring the bends for fun, the Merc is no where near as good at that.

They are two completely different cars so comparing them like we are here is a bit daft.

Personally my two favourite motor manufacturers are Mercedes and Porsche and I look forward to the day when I can have an AMG E-Class for the family and a Porsche for me:D

That might change with the arrival of the Panamera of course:

And the price is................................ Well above that i asume of an E.
IIRC I read in Autocar some time ago that the V6 would start at under £40k.

In fact I think there was a thread about it on here a while back - if I had the energy I'd do a search!! :D
