211 E55 vs 996 C2

Great Debate!

Who at Porsche would have thought that a 5 seat automatic limo with a boot full of luggage could push their out and out sports car so close in real world conditions....but actually so could a well driven sports hatch these days but heck that is to sensible so my tip of the day is massive grunt, understated looks, all the room you need so keep the E55!

Everyman to his taste. I love the AMG no doubt, If only merc would provide the choice for a manual.
Massive grunt yes but i do not like understated looks.
If i pay 60k for car i do not want it looking like a 30k car with mods on.

especially when you can buy an AMG kit these days straight from the dealer and stick on quad pipes yourself.

Already seen that, which the ruf won twice from the video.
Don't understand the top speeds at the end as a ruf will do over 200mph

Did it ? The CL65 had a higher speed and passed it at the end ...

Oh , go on , tell me it's because the Porker braked ;)

Matt topped 200mph in the CL i beleive , in Germany ...

Lets hope the sl coupe concept will not be a CONCEPT then porsche will have a battle on there hands.

That Porsche 4 door looks like something that comes out for the skirting boards in a Thai prison at night .....

Hot Diggedy !!

Now that's depreciation !!

CLs have always been the biggest depreciating Mercs around :( - though saying that it means you can get a CL55 AMG for £25k! :bannana:

All that grunt and still stuff a Porker in the real world for £25K!

But in reality that's all it is ;).
Truth is Stats007 I love and deeply admire Porsche for their single minded approach to product development, evolution or their cars and their unbending resolve to do what they do for the good of their brand, their cars and their customers.

Mercedes-Benz let that slip in the late 1980's and it is so important for them to regain this as soon as they can. It's not all about accountants letting go of the grip, it's about developing your product to be the best in each sector at all times and then the market dominance will return.

Meanwhile I still love having a pop and knowing that when a bend approaches I am second best but my four passengers hardly notice!

the cl never passed it anywhere at the end. the race was over before the cl came close and a ruf turbo will clear 200mph any time without breaking a sweat. why wait at the end when the porsche was already slowing down?
Are we watching the same race?:D
even a ZO6 corvette will beat that cl65.
it is a boat/barge board pretending to be a sports coupe and it wallows like a hovercraft around corners.
great for munching the miles in a straight line though

Even the fastest of RUF cars requires a favourable wind to reach 200mph at Bruntingthorpe. A quick review of the high speeds regularly recorded there would verify that.

Last time we assembled up there as a group, a gentleman attended in a DMS tuned 575hp 996 Turbo - who essentially went home very upset as he didn't break 200mph. The staff stated that the 200mph guys can't always hit there mark every time.

I don't think 'without breaking a sweat' applies.

To be expected from a Porsche owner ;) :p

So , although the CL posted a faster trap speed and a faster top speed , it lost ....

I will grant you that it didn't actually pass the RUF on the straight, but it was reeling it in , another few hundred metres it would be past it , and another few hundred more it would have been well past it .....

Looks like the RUF was the one running out of puff while the CL was still getting into it's stride .... or had the Porsche owner throttled back to 'give the Merc a chance' ;)

Still , i guess we'll never agree , but both incredible cars ... I have actually driven a 993 Turbo and it stunned me , so i can only imagine what the new generations are like...

Do not get me wrong i love mercs, but i do not like cars that try to be a million things at once e.g sporty MPV whatever.
So if you want a cruiser get a merc.
If you want a sports car, a merc is not one.:D :D

Do not forget i am also a merc owner even though it is a small slow one, it is still a merc.

A RUF RT12 has the new VMAX record at Bruntinthorpe for 207mph.

This is a case of the absolute latest and greatest and yes it cracked it with a good margin - but this is not true for them all.
