Just another question that has been raised previously but not answered my own query, but has anyone successfully had 285's fitted to the rear end of a W211 E55 saloon, if so how did you accomplish this feat, rolling the arches or changing the ET, the BBS wheels I have, are ET32, currently with 275, it looks close, but itching to buy some 285's The thing with rolling the arches, is, how much paint damage, some have told me none, some have said, 'cracked the paint' I appreciate the AMG has already rolled arches apparently, but thinking
3-4mm its not that much surely?? Then I come back to the flexing of the camber as the suspension travels, uhm!
So anyone running on 285 on a E55 without problems, or done this previously, how????

Hi ricky,

if your lucky you could get away with no damage of a good arch rolling tool is used and paint is warmed up.

realistically, as there is a double skin to roll in some parts, the paint will crack where it bends , this will then need repainting(may just the inner lip, but possibly the rear wing if the cracked paint cracks out.)

if you had 18`s, I would say no problem with 285, 19`s there is possibility of rubbing!

if you have a spare rim, why not visit a used tyre place and get them to mount a 285 and plonk it on to see how it fits.

I had some 285`s which I ended up selling without trying to put them on

Hi mate, (hope your well, not seen you for ages), yes I know we have previously discussed this between ourselves already, just feel I need to get the 285's on, but appreciate what your saying here, with hindsight perhaps I should have brought your 285's when you had them.
Want to do this, but am just paranoid that rolling the arches will result in paint work, my mind won't allow that, and trialling a fitment of used 285 on my BBS wheels, will the rims get damaged in the fitting and removal process, suppose I have got to be brave here, just close my eyes and get it done, and pray nothing goes horrible wrong, ! A bit like going to the dentist really!:D

you need a CLS 55 .. they have 285s at the rear as standard :)

Ricky Hi,

I think to get any noticeable difference you need to go wider than just 10mm. Brabus managed to get 10.5" wheels in the back with 295 tyres, which is the way to go in your case. You'd have to roll the arches but at least for 20mm!

Sean mate, that's not a lot of comfort to me;), given this is being aired soley to be hopefully, able to help me keep up with your GT3 at GW shortly:thumb:

Alx mate, 20mm, jez, if I had to watch them pushing the arches that far, probably result in me having a cardiac arrest!

But do take your point, perhaps we will discuss this further, when we meet up shortly:thumb:

you overtook a few times in July last year, and I'm sure you will again in 4 weeks!

I fitted 19" CLS wheels on my S211, with ET28 at the rear. As I bought them with tyres I thought I'd have a look with the original tyre size of 285.

They cleared with no problem and my Airmatic had been lowered slightly.

However, I opted for the E class tyre size of 275.

I think your playing mind games here Sean you sneaky bugger LOL:confused:, think you were pacing yourself last time, albeit it was a great day out, you were waiting to ponce another day, GW in March I think!:p. But look forward to catching up mate, your always great company, as are those other sneaky buggers, Mika, AceJ, and Wagon
all with toooo much Porsche or SL power. Lopes is also down there with Gary, in their Evo thingy, and I hear Alx's, car may be a little (understatement) quicker than it should be shortly. Going to be a great day out, with a few friends, hope it stops raining by then, looking forward to it.:thumb:

Oh!! that is interesting Developer, Thx for that info, if I grasp this right, you have run ET 28 with 285's, my own proposed wheels are ET32, so could be worth the risk of trialling them out, but I bare in mind you then swapped out to 275's, and also Alx's comments earlier, thanks for your input, appreciated, going to the tyre place before next GW event , going to sort this craving out.

Just for clarity Ricky, I didn't run them - they were on the wheels when I bought them, so I fitted the wheels to the car for a look/see on the drive.

Then I took them off and after a wheel refurb, I fitted 275/245 E Class sizes.

However, that guy in the MB World link did run 285/255 as per his photos.

I also recall Sheepy fitted 20's to his E63 and I bet they were running some pretty big tyres.
