55k Air Filter Options

Why did you change back? Are the K&N's too much hassle?

Engine did not seem right normally when cold almost felt like the car was running on 4 cyls some mornings, so I did a google and other merc drivers had a similar problem, so bought the oem ones from ECP, swapped them over and all has been well, don't know the reason but just did not suit my car, I have used K&N on all my cars and never had to remove them once. Knew it was fine before fitting so figured remove and see what happens, personally I would rather swap out the paper ones more often if required.

What filters did you go for in the end? I think I should change mine as looked at them the other day and they look a bit crushed up. Mine are standard paper OEM ones currently. I was thinking of BMC or Green Cotton as Olly has suggested, looking online the BMC seem much more expensive though!?

For now have just ordered a couple of sets of paper one's. There are many to pick from - Mann, Mahle, Heingst, Guttmann, Wix, AP, etc etc. My OEM filters have had it, for the EC day I took them out and cleaned them up so they were filtering fine, however they probably were not allowing effective flow so may have been robbing me of at least 2 BHP :D. On a serious note I will compare the new one's with the old OEM one's and check for number of pleats v depth, worse case I'll send them back and get OEM one's.

Overall Best filters appear to be K&N on ability to flow air, purists will claim they let through too many particles, but I am yet to see an engine failure prematurely as a result. Green cotton, BMC etc are all good, as are ITG which I've had in my previous cars and flow very well. My only reservation on any aftermarket filter is build quality and fitment.

Jules.

Thanks Jules

I only had a look at mine the other day when checking size of my throttle body. They haven't been changed since I've had my car (3 years), not sure before that but they looked pretty clean, but were a bit crushed so probably not helping air flow. I think I will get some new ones whatever just not sure if oem or maybe green cotton.

We use BMC filters. Fantastic quality fur ment and used by F1 and touring cars so can't be bad.

Olly - sounds good, have you got them in stock? If so I will put them in while my car is with you on Friday.

I can get them. Just buzz me Tuesday and I will get some.

If anyone wants to borrow a set to try I have a set of BMC filters for the 55K, please note the are not for sale or forever as I still want them. They have covered approx 5k miles, you can try them for a few weeks then send them back to me.

Hi Paul

I would like to give them a try then if you don't mind before I decide what to do, I can collect from you.

Will give you a call on Tuesday if you are around.

Cheers Simon

Hi Paul

I will be in town Thursday, so could drop by later in the day if that suits. I will give you a call when you are back. Whatever happens it looks like I need some new filters anyway, but out of interest do you think they offer any improvement over standard paper ones?

Thursday is good for me, are they worth it :dk:

I like the BMC one's they fit well and will not deform, they are reusable after cleaning and in a laboratory will typically flow more than paper filters. Reality is though that the OEM units will flow more than the intake so unlikely you will see any gain that you could measure, long term they can be more cost effective as a set of OEM filters will typically set you back £30 each time they need replacing. In the end it normally comes down to personal choice :D

Hi Paul

Hope you have / had a good few days off. Thanks for the offer to try your BMC filters but I am just going to get Olly at PCS to get some in for me and I will fit them as I am going down to him on Friday anyway. Mine need changing and for the extra cost I may as well just go for them.

Thanks again

Simon
