55K Engine, What is the correct IAT

Interesting info cheers guys. I made a decision to buy a new pump as that seemed to be the consensus of opinion, so I ordered the Bosch 010 pump. Fingers crossed I will have it by the weekend so i can fit it and it will solve my issues.
I am considering doing some mods soon, headers, heat exchanger, remap/pulley etc. this issue has me prioritising the list slightly differently now, heat exchanger first I think.

^ Good move Andy. Tony above has a well documented thread on 55k heat issues and its something I'll look at before I go for the remap and s/c pulley change.

Are the 77mm pulleys clutched or fixed Amo?
I'd be concerned especially with the heat issues if they are fixed pulleys.

Thanks for pointing this Roger.

I think its FSP and i think i should consider HE upgrade first.

Does anyone know of any decent UK suppliers for HE upgrade? I think CLS has more space behind bumper to allow for bigger HE.

Anyone got any suggestions?

77mm pulleys are clutched

Are they? i was under the impression these are FSP.

Yep clutched. Who did you speak to? Just to be clear what i have, in case of any confusion. Upd 77mm sc pulley, fitted by Msl. Any of the above issues with heat, i can recommend Acid at msl to talk to, or even better look the car over.

Just to give my account with cooling & performance. I have been running my car for a number of months with the Upd 77mm sc pulley & headers. It was fully serviced and looked over by Acid, and johnsons pump fitted. It has been very reliable, very quick, and cooling has not been an issue for me with near standard cooling setup on the road. The most obvious and cheap first option for us is going to be to split the cooling. This was always planned. I don't unfortunately have any data logging with my current set up or would have posted. With help I have obviously monitored the iats on runs, and it seems my car is doing pretty well (on the road) before splitting the cooling.

The UPD 77mm is clutched but there is a 77mm FSP as well, jimiE55 if your IAT'S are good with the 77mm with near stock cooling thats impressive, i know acid carried out 4 back to back aggressive runs on mine on the dyno only just making it before the first stage of retardation and mine has the larger HE, split cooling upgraded pump with front tank and KC and thats with a Eurocharged map and pulley (less heat) .

That's not something you would normally see on the 55 platform with most needing a cooling down break between runs 2 and 3 never mind 4. :D

As you say, no doubt they all suffer with heat. The cooler any car runs the better the performance, reliability etc. I'm not qualified to give any advice to anyone, so thought best to point them in one of the right Amg Specialist directions, and let them know how my car was going with the pulley. I have had a fair bit of fun on the road, iats drop pretty swiftly, with the occasional test blasts. I am lucky that i have the Old Man and all his experience with performance cars, so we can choose some of the work ourselves. Would have started a thread but, did a number of runs previously but was unable to retrieve the data logging. My knowledge of the cars iats has been of live monitoring so far.

My only advice is as you had already planned is the split cooling, got to be the best bang for buck which can be a relatively cheap mod with a smaller front mounted reservoir or more expensive with either front or rear tanks followed by KC.

Then the dilemma of efficiency being compromised by the reverse effects of the HE actually warming the water, some remove altogether but if your AC stops working so does your cooling......BOOM potential, that scenario definitely requires live in car live data logging.

I now have decent IAT's after over a year trying different set ups.
Ambient temp the other day was 29c and my IAT's cruising were between 39c and 43c.
Push the throttle and IAT never went above 50c reaching 160mph (Autobahn!)

Yesterday ambient was 18c and my IAT's were between 27c and WOT run 62c reaching 190mph ("Autobahn officer!")

Front grill area is free now of previous hoses and Killer Chiller, which has been relocated in the cab filter area. Fits nicely and neat and tidy with the hoses etc.

Re-connected the Eurocharged Heat Exchanger as a fail safe (Ginger55k Tony ;))in case the AC has issues.

I have a flick switch in the ashtray area which lights up when the spilt cooling tank is working so no light = problems! Fingers crossed it stays lit :)

The big test will be on the runway going from 0-190mph full on so hopefully I won't be seeing 80c again.

Still a few tweaks I need to carry out when I have time but pretty happy as things are for now

My recommendation for all 55K engines is upgraded HE and split cooling as a minimum. Then Killer chiller and pulley combo dependant on boost requirements.

I think I may have the quickest 55K in the UK at present as Paul's and Acid's are off the road in pieces (What's left :) )

Thanks to MSL for last week and EC UK for the week before (Switching AC on ;))

Oright Mate,

What power did you get to after 2nd attempt of Remap? How is Car running now? I am considering 77mm now...84mm would be waste of money i think LOL when 77mm can get me close to 600bhp.

It was not as i expected.

The car was still showing AFR of 10.1 @ WOT

The car is still with acid, going on 3 weeks now. :dk:

No errors are showing, o2 sensors changed, Boost pressure sensor changed, vacume leaks checked. Yesterday Acid was going to change the IC Pump. Funnily the IAT are remaining consistant.... The mystery continues

So my set up is

Eurocharged Heat Exchange
Split cooling - Using the BMW Resovoir (needs to be installed)
Johnson Pump
77mm Pulley
Remap

Everything is being supplied by Acid@MSL.

I am hoping this will suffice for everyday driving and the occasional WOT on a cool dry day. Also get me as close to the 600 mark as possible. :thumb:

Future mods will be upgrading the manifold and exhaust :wallbash:

Hi,
Well I bought a new Bosch 010 Pump and fitted yesterday, direct replacement for the 03 pump that was fitted.
The IATs now do not exceed 55c and that's only when giving beans for a prolonged period, generally the IAT is running at high 20s very low 30s.
Very easy to replace though bleeding it was a bit problematic.
I am going to be taking the front bumper off to have repainted as there is a slight scrape on the underside, and I need to replace a couple of failing parking sensors I thought I would replace the Heat exchanger at the same time in preparation for future mods.
I am looking to fit a PLM Heat Exchanger and the price seems very good, has anyone any experience of fitting uprated HE or better still the PLM HE.

Great to hear the pumps sorted the high iats. Can't help on heat exchanger, but quite a few members have had different ones fitted. If you don't get much response, start a new thread, (which heat exchanger e55). I'm hoping to split my cooling this week, so which heat exchanger is of interest to me in the near future.

Hi, have you had the split cooling fitted yet?

Jules

Hi Andy

Good to hear this helped - when you said In previous posts about a smell , can you define it? Is it like a musty coolant smell ?
did you see a noticeable change in performance after you got the IAT'a down ?

That is a good way to describe the smell, there was no real performance increase but it allowed me to maintain the performance as it would go really flat when the IATs were to high.
I still need to fit an uprated HE though I do now have it, I just haven't got round to removing the front bumper yet to get painted.

What HE did you go for and is it a straight swap/
